Woman Kills Son, Self At Gun Range

CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- A woman with a history of mental illness shot and killed her 20-year-old son before killing herself at a Casselberry gun range, police said.

Marie Moore, 44, of Altamonte Springs, shot her son, Mitchel Moore, before committing suicide at about 4:20 p.m. at Shoot Straight Gun Range & Store, which is located on U.S. Highway 17-92.

I go to Shoot Straight in Tampa all the time (albeit until I determine the extent of their "No Reloads" policy, I won't be going there for their range). I've been to other ranges where people have decided to commit suicide as well.

Now, the anti-gun forces will tell you the best way to prevent this is to shut down gun ranges and ban guns altogether, but as I've said over and over, people who are actually ready to end their life (not the cry for help type suicides) are going to do it, regardless of the tool set they have available. To blame the gun range / guns is the exact same as blaming the Golden Gate Bridge. A firearm is generally an effective tool to do it with, that is all.

Now, what really pisses me off about this article is the last two paragraphs

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has a database of people declared mentally ill or unfit by a court of law, and it's used to screen permits when people apply to purchase a firearm.

The state does not check, however, to see if gun owners have mental health problems when their licenses are renewed.

This has nothing to do with the article! Did this nutcase actually have a permit? That's left unsaid. Instead, we have an implicit implication that mentally unstable people have permits, go to ranges, and off themselves and their offspring.

Look for the blood dancers to use instances like this to lubricate their donation requests and to push for more laws that wouldn't have stopped this. I'd not be surprised if they start demanding background checks just to rent a firearm (effectively shutting down ranges).
