90% of traces, not 90% of all guns.

No matter how hard they push the meme, it's still a lie and more and more people are catching on.

Re "90% of traces, not 90% of all guns" it is actually even a bit worse: the ones on which traces are performed are those already suspected of being from the US, almost certainly from only the northernmost quarter of Mexican states/provinces.

For almost fifty years I have looked askance at such statistics when I suspect them of being cherry-picked for political purposes. I started with the attempts to ban Playboy® with the statistic "75 per cent of death-row inmates are known to have viewed pornography," and my immediate reaction was "Yeah, but 100 per cent are known to have imbibed water, let's ban that."

Actually, "90% of all guns" wouldn't really surprise me much. Notice they're not saying that they come from the civilian market. I'd be willing to bet that most of them were sold by the US government to the Mexican government and to various South American governments (or insurgencies) over the last 30-40 years. These would be the full-auto, military weapons the anti's are trying to make everyone panic about.

These weapons would trace back to the US. They're just not telling us where they were between then and when they were captured. Lying by omission.

As for the AK's, it's a simple theory: We supplied insurgents with AK's instead of M-16/M-4's so it wouldn't be obvious to the governments we were trying to overthrow (by proxy) that the US was behind it.

Jake, that's clearly not the case here. 90% of traces run which are only run on a small subset of the guns they've found.

If I pulled 3 bills from my wallet that were $1, $1, and $5, that doesn't mean I have 66% $1 bills in my wallet, only 66% of the ones I pulled out. I could have a wad of twenties in there (I'm married, so technically the only thing I have in my wallet are receipts).

I'm not saying that they're not lying through their teeth by misleading us about the numbers that they have. I'm not even saying that it is 90% of all guns. I'm only saying that it wouldn't surprise me.

I have no doubt that during the cold war, the US was handing out weapons like candy to any group that was "fighting communism." I'm also sure that the Soviet Union was doing the same for any Communist group they could find. One of the places this was happening was in South America. Any guns that were provided by the US could be traceable to the US (at least, by the US .gov).

I'm also sure that a lot of the guns being picked up were provided to the gangs by people in the Mexican military - and that a large number were probably sold to the Mexican Army by the US .gov. Those would also be traceable to the US.

Really, the number that can be "traced" to the US is completely irrelevant. What actually matters is how they're actually getting to the gangs.

Just to prove they don't care about the truth of the matter, the senate passed a bill yesterday that authorized millions of additional $ specifically for increased weapons enforcement on the border.

I'm fairly certain that I can't legally import and export arms to Mexico on a whim. I can't legally produce, import or export certain types of recreational drugs, either. Yet someone is doing this.

If 90 percent of the weapons the cartel militias employ come from this country... so what? The AWB '94 didn't have an effect on the black market in Mexico, and neither will the next one. The fact that the heavily-armed American populace isn't behaving like Mexican cartel enforcers destroys any argument from the disarmers.

The most common tactic employed in the absence of supporting argument is repetition.

And exaggeration. Now they're saying 95%.
