This quote is beyond asinine
But Leveritt emphasized that it's also in the public interest to ensure that dangerous people aren't granted concealed-carry permits. "The most important thing is to keep these permits from falling into the hands of convicted felons," Leveritt said. "And if that is what you want to do, there is nothing worse that you could do than to hide the names of the people with these permits."

Emphasis mine.
Let's think about this for a minute. We need to have a system that runs background checks on anyone interested in owning / carrying / thinking about firearms since, if they're bad people who are a detriment to society, they shouldn't have one.
The way to ensure that this system works is to openly display the list of everyone who has a permit in the hopes that someone, anyone, will scour the list and find the bad guys with boomsticks and report them to the police?
Excuse me?
One would think there'd be nothing worse than a system that is supposed to protect from bad guys getting bad things that works so poorly that (a) it's required that it's used and (b) requires random searches from random people in an attempt to track down what the police should be doing anyway. If you have to wait until a newspaper publishes a database that exposes hundreds of thousands of law abiding citizens' information in hopes of catching the bad guys, then you're a little late in the game.
This is why I do not accept the premise that this has anything to do with public safety. It's yet another layer of control by people who cannot convince you that their ideas are worthy to accept voluntarily.
