Worked about 12 hours on some code. Closed down VS2005, reopened, and somehow the directory that held all my data objects was deleted.

Grabbed some recovery software, got most of the data objects back, then whatever took away the Data Access Layer project then erased all the Framework objects as well.

Literally, two days worth of coding up in smoke.

Going through recovery again now. Backing this shit up as soon as I'm done...

Update - No go. Even an exhaustive search for recovery cannot find the files. 70% of all the work has been lost. I now need to basically start over.

Shit...

Sorry to hear that. I've been there, done that, and I know how bad it sucks. That's one of the reasons I set up SVN at the house.

There used to be a bug in Netware Client 2 for Windows 9x that would do the reverse operation when one requested a copy to, or from network shares. Nothing like moving everything to your "back up" copy on the share and then deleting the local copy thinking that it was no longer needed. Got burned by that one once.

Then the untimely hard disk crash. Lost a whole project for BF2 server just days before I moved into my new house, and couldn't deal with it because I had to GTFO of my apartment. I still have my script API so I can look at how cool it would have been had I not lost all my work. It wasn't a work project though, so phew!

Then there was that time many years ago when I apparently upgraded a library that was in use by Linux. So the kernel thought it would be neat-o to randomly corrupt the filesystem. Never happened again since.

I may not have had that particular problem, but I have had more hard disks go bad than I care to list. Two on my work desktop, and a server one that I can remember--all at the worst possible time. Don't remember how many at home, but one year when I had my business, I lost a whole year of accounting due to the ZIP drive's infamous "click death" problem. Good thing I printed a lot or reports.

SVN has never acted that irresponsibly with my work, so far at least. if it ever did, that would be the last time i touched it.

Hard to tell who the culprit was. Could have been Vista. Could have been Visual Studio 2005.

you might not have to. there's a subversion plug-in for visual studio, to let it store your data in a SVN repository and do all the version control-y goodness; and the SVN server can, but doesn't have to, run on windows.

actually, i note the home page lists TWO plug-ins for VS. dunno if one or both might be commercial, but i'm sure there must be at least one freeware one.
