I was "that guy". You know the guy I mean. The guy at the range. The guy at the range with the timid girlfriend who didn't like guns. The girlfriend who really didn't want to be there and really needed a gentle, guiding hand to make her first time at the range enjoyable. The guy full of fail. The guy who handed said timid girlfriend a .357 Magnum and then left her to her own devices.

I know this idiot who, upon trying to get his wife to shoot a shotgun for the first time in her life, gave her one loaded with 12 gauge, 3" magnum slugs.
From what I remember... err "hear", this guy had finally got his wife to the range and had reduced recoil buckshot for her to shoot but the range officer nixed the loose shot idea and required slugs. I He decided that it was damn near impossible to get his wife to the range again relatively soon and instead of just packing up and going home (which would have been prudent), gave her the shotgun and told her to just suck it up.
Sadly, the wife was shooting from the hip and the stock literally ripped skin off the inside of her elbow. From the stories I heard, she was willing to at least take another shot (of yes, 3" magnum) and did mention later at lunch that the next time she'd wear long sleeves, so it might not have been as bad as it seems.
He still hasn't got her back to the range since.
