'Cept with revolvers and shotguns. Shotgun takes revolver

The two men who live in the ground-floor apartment told officers they were preparing to watch a movie when they heard a loud noise. Their front door was suddenly kicked open and two men burst into the apartment, one of them holding a revolver, police were told.
Both residents grabbed shotguns and one of them fired, killing one of the intruders while the other ran away.

I try to tell anyone who'll listen, for home defense, nothing beats a shotgun. In fact, I think I should make a semi-auto shotgun with pump action because the sound alone of a shell being chambered is usually enough to make the goblin squirt his panties and high tail it outta Dodge.

And if that doesn't work, you can shoot the bastard.

There's no excuse for not having a shotgun when you can buy a semi-auto Winchester foul gun for about $150 used.

You know, I don't currently own a shotgun nor have I ever fired one before. I might have to remedy that in 2009.

The main problem with cycling the action is that it ejects the round that's already in the chamber.

I don't keep one in the chamber for that exact reason. I WANT that sound. I've had to use it one time in my life and it worked exactly like it should have - although it scared the crap out of my Landlady who had forgotten to let me know she was coming over to fix some stuff at 5:30 AM. She had hopped on the roof and through the ceiling heard the cha-chunk of the shotgun (I thought someone was breaking in through the upstairs).

Scared her silly, she was screaming her head off (she was fine if not a bit shaken), but that day I learned that the sound a shotgun makes is unmistakable, even through roofs and walls.

While a shotgun is better than nothing, I'd put forth that an AR-style (or maybe moreso an M4gery type) rifle would be better.

Furthermore, do you know how well your shotgun patterns? What if the bad guy was holding your spouse or child? Would you feel able to take the shot with a shotgun?

The whole "rack sound" thing... well, it worked on your unsuspecting landlady, but on some drugged up crazy hellbent on killing you for your Nikes? Well, maybe it will work, but I reckon you've never crapped your pants at the sound of a shotgun racking so it's obviously not a guaranteed response. In a self-defense situation likely the first shot is the one that's going to save your life... so why would you want the shotgun to be unloaded and waste precious time making a "scary" noise (that gives away your position to boot) when instead you should be shooting? I'm guessing you carry your pistol with one in the pipe... so why be inconsistent here?

A shotgun was originally designed to shoot small flying things, but we've been able to figure out how to use it for other things, like personal defense. That's not necessarily a bad thing because it may be all we've got and certainly a shotgun can be very effective. But why not use a tool, like an M4-style rifle, that was specifically designed for such tasks? It's merely a matter of using the best tool for the job. While a shotgun is better than nothing, IMHO an M4-style rifle is better.

Anyway, bottom line is that we all have to pick the best tool for our needs and situations. If there was "one right tool" we wouldn't have so many wonderful firearms to choose from. :-)

You could keep the shotgun with a Snap-Cap in the chamber, which would also let you release the pressure in the hammer spring.
As for the "extra time" it takes you to rack one into the chamber, it's pretty damned negligible, but you could also keep one chambered if you lived in THAT bad a neighborhood, or were really worried that armed intruders would enter with guns-a-ready (or already blazing). Then you could rack it or not, according to the situation. One "lost shot" might be acceptable, since you've got six or seven more. Once the thunder starts, the goblins will probably either be running for the hills, diving for cover, or ventilated.
Personally, I think I'd like the option of scaring the miscreant away first, rather than having to shoot him.The racking of a shotgun slide carries a threat that no verbal warning can convey...and it works in ANY LANGUAGE. I have second-hand knowledge of just such a situation, and from the account I heard, it worked like a charm.

My old landlord and friend, a very rich man, advised me to get a shotgun with just the same info: the sound alone sobers most people up. He kept his loaded with birdshot in the first round, and triple-ought (or whatever the really big shot is called) for the second round, in case the first wasn't a deterrent enough.

The shotgun is next on my list; I am a complete novice with firearms, and my first purchase was a nifty Ruger 10-22 rifle this past summer. Beautiful work of art, that.

After that, I'll want a pistol. Again, for the art as well as the practicality, I am considering a Browning 1911 .45...
