It's pretty clear by now that H-S Precision does not care about the backlash from printing an endorsement from Lon Horiuchi, the FBI agent who shot and killed Vicki Weaver while she held her 10 month old baby. Calling their low key response (they didn't announce it and only hid it on their web page) tepid would be like calling ice hot.
My opinion is that they're not concerned about this for a mix of two reasons. I don't believe they make their money selling directly to you and me and I'd assume they're in business because Remington is 1/3rd their sales, and they cater to governmental agencies directly. I've never used them, but I hear they actually make decent products.
Remington, again, finds their business in the crosshairs for some other idiot's bad judgment. The first was Jim Zumbo, who called AR-15s "terrorist rifles" and saw nothing wrong with them being banned. Within one short weekend, Zumbo had lost his Remington sponsorship due to his comments.
Now, Remington again has taken appropriate steps to protect their company name. Tommy Millner has issued a statement disapproving of H-S Precisions endorsement. I don't generally buy ammunition since I reload, but I do need .22lr and I don't care if it's twice the price of the competitors and jams twice for every one shot, I will only buy Remington ammo from now on.
However, we need to apply pressure to other dealers who might sell their product. I purchase practically everything I need for shooting from Midway USA. They have been a company that has been very supportive of the shooting sports, and I don't plan on boycotting them any time soon since it's not their problem that H-S Precision has an IQ slightly above room temperature butter. However, they do sell H-S Precision gear.
While I have absolutely no desire to stop shopping at Midway, I do plan on writing a letter ensuring that they are aware of the H-S Precision brouhaha. I would hold no animosity towards them if they continued to sell the gear because if the market isn't as pissed off as I am, then I'm in no position to do much about it. But it can't hurt to let them know that their customers don't appreciate HS's snub and if enough people contact them and tell them, Midway may just find out that carrying their line isn't a sound business decision.
H-S Precision. When you absolutely must shoot yourself in the foot...
I won't let it stop me from being a Midway customer. On the other hand, I would prefer if Midway shares our concerns.
