Subject: gun-as-medical device
What do you suppose it cures?

to which I've replied

Well, for arthritic women in wheelchairs who don't have the upper body strength to correctly hold and fire a regular pistol, it cures rapists and thugs hellbent on attacking the weak. One dose from this device and said rapist or thug is cured of their desire to ever harm another human being again.

I can easily see the "taken and used against them" argument coming into play here.

I'm going to go out on a limb, but I'm pretty sure most thugs aren't going to know what the palm pistol is nor realize how many rounds it holds and will probably assume that their compadre's condition of returning to room temperature is contagious and hopefully leave.

I think that the palm pistol is a medical device in the same sense that crutches, wheel chairs, hearing aids, and eyeglasses are medical devices--they don't cure or even treat an underlying condition, but they do assist you in performing the tasks necessary for independent living: moving about, hearing, seeing, and now, defending oneself.

Makes perfect sense to me.

I got a smile ear to ear when I read about it, I think it's a great move.

I am concerned about the unintended consequences and opportunity to fuel the antis.

Compare hearing, eyesight, mobility, situational awareness, reflexes, fragility, dexterity, memory, speed of someone elderly compared to a typical thug.

If ANY situation that's ever occurred has ever played into their "it'll be used against you" argument better than this one, I can't find it.

I'd just rather they had something with a few shots or even a more ergonomic "traditional" pistol.

+1 to djmoore, My Father-in-Law is blind. He has all sorts of cool gadgets supplied by medical companies. He's still just as blind, but now he's not helplessly flailing in the dark.

As for the talk of this being single-shot. Well that just means a person needs to carry a few and practice a "New York Reload" with them.

God my frail old Grandmother could carry about 30 of those in her Vera Bradly Purse!

My ten-year old son saw the picture of this and made the observation that it seemed to resemble an asthma inhaler. Could be a bit of a problem if our elderly consumer got confused...

Yep, my wife could probably carry at least a six pack of those in her purse. But don't sell Gramps and Granny short. Many times the mind's still sharp long after the body has failed. My great grandmother carried a "palm squeezer" up her sleeve from the end of the "Civil War" (strange name for a war) until the day in 1946 she died, and that's not so much different than this gadget.

My grandmother, now, carried a honking big Merwin and Hulbert .44 Russian revolver in her hand warmer, "muff," and potted rabbits on her way to church. There was always a handout for any hobo who asked politely, and I don't think anyone who asked was ever less than polite.
