Mad Rocket Scientist goes toe to toe with an individual armed with a lethal sense of stupidity. Speaks RS

and soon enough I found myself in discussion with a person who, well, I think this says it all:

That decision reflected right wing dogma that ignores the availability issue and attempts to divert the desire to address the root of the problem by arrogantly prescribing that "criminals" are the problem.

I mean, wow... I can't even begin to consider how to argue with something like that. There's a saying that you can't win an argument with the illogical using logic as they are immune to it in the first place. This definitely applies.

This person is one of those who truly believes that a gun in your hand will force you to do something against your will. His (I assume) comments are chocked full of buzzwords like "paranoid" and "whackos" in an attempt to paint anyone with a differing opinion as not possessing the mental faculties to argue with. It's the same as saying "Only idiots disagree with me".

What is scary is how blind this person is, how absolutely sure he is of his opinion that facts cannot dissuade him from his chosen path. It doesn't matter that a fraction of a fraction of guns are actually used in crime, it's plainly evident that the number of guns are the problem.

Unfortunately, you cannot reason with the unreasonable. I'm learning to not to try to debate those types of people directly, but rather comment to clear up any misrepresentation of the facts and let those who are just reading make their own minds up.

You can read the whole article and debate here. My favorite part, though is this

Stick to the point, this debate isn't about knives, rocks, or drunk drivers, its about hand guns - the most effective killing devise devised.

That just goes to show you how deluded this guy is. I'm trying to find the link, but recently I read that due to medical advances (lots of stuff learned from the battlefield), 80% of gunshot victims survive. The interesting part is that that included suicides by firearm which tended to be head shots, the one thing not very survivable.

Part of the reason behind the survival ratio is the medical advances but that's coupled with the fact that most shootings are done with a handgun. Handguns, by their very nature of being small and concealable, are not as powerful as rifles. They are also much harder to aim and control (again, due to their diminutive size). Add into that fact that most gang shootings seem to be with 9mm or .380's, and it appears it takes many shots to do the job right.

Not exactly "the most effective killing device". I'd probably give that title to the guillotine since I have a feeling it didn't have an 80% survival rate.

But those facts are irrelevant to the blind. You can't argue with them because they know what they saw in Die Hard IIX and they know a snub nosed .38 Special will rip a person in half and throw them through a plate glass window.

So, don't argue with them, just lay out the facts for others to see.
