Or you might miss it. Here's some pretty kick ass high speed photography

The flashes I have aren't fast enough for this type of work. The on camera flash I have (Nikon SB-800) is reported to be able to freeze a bullet mid flight, but triggering it is a bit trickier.

Still, I'd love to build a sound trigger some day.

I read somewhere about a cheap way to get a standard photoflash unit to illuminate high-speed motion. The thing to do, apparently, is to fashion a little reflector out of aluminum foil so that some of the light emitted by the strobe is sent directly to the sensor. The sensor will interpret this as light returning from the subject, and more than sufficient to expose the film, thus shutting off the strobe after just a few microseconds.

Or at least, that's what I've read.

It also depends on the flash tube as well. Some just aren't that fast, like my Alien Bees. Because their discharge time is slow, they'll create blur no matter how soon you turn them off.
