Greg and I went to watch an IDPA match today, put on by the Florida West Coast Defensive Pistol Club. I had been wanting to observe a match to see if it was something I was interested in doing, and of course, it was.
It definitely looked like something I could get into. Everyone was friendly, the competition looked challenging, and the entire group was very accommodating to Greg and I.
I have to figure out the budget necessary to do something like this, especially shooting 10mm. Today's conditions would not have been real good for picking up brass - it was pretty much a mud pit. I'd need an extra magazine and the gear to hold them. My CTAC holster would work fine so that's good.
It was interesting talking to a few guys about it. One general theme seemed to be that it was a good thing to do because it'd show you that you're not quite as good of a shot as you think given that you have to move and shoot from different angles. I like that idea. Anything to improve my skills in a way that might come in useful in real life is something to go after. I assume most criminals don't stand still, wearing a shirt with concentric circles on them.
The coolest thing of the day though was being approached by a gentleman who asked if I was Robb Allen. Turns out, he reads Sharp as a Marble (Hi John!). I had to leave the firing line lest my inflated ego got in everyone's way ;)
Gonna do it, for sure, just have to figure out the costs and get familiar with the rules. Not sure I'll be able to start next month, then the holiday season is going to start looming, but I'll figure out a way to work it in.
