WHEW!!!!

OK, that sucked. That sucked big time. Here's the story for all of you not in the know (that's you, Mr. Internet Reader!)

On 6/6, my server died. Died big. The hard drive had unrecoverable errors and the server containing all my web sites, blogs, databases, and domain stuff bit the dirt. No way to get it back.

So I opened up a virtual server I use to back up the domain and all required files. Turns out, the VM was trying to use an older network card that isn't in the system any more and, well, with no connectivity, totally failed to back anything up.

Two complete failures at one time.

And to top it all off, while I was desperately trying to salvage the server, I caught a whiff of something burning. That would have been the power supply in my computer. The fan froze up and stopped cooling the power supply down. Apparently, there's a maximum limit of dust and cat fur that a fan can deal with until it locks up.

So, I took a grumpy trip to CompUSA and bought new drives, a new power supply, and external cage to try to resurrect the old drive in, and a 1TB backup system.

I used some low level tools to pull off a backup from 6/23/08. That literally took about 24 hours. I also got a majority of the code for the site back, but some corruption in the old skin file is preventing it from showing up so for now, enjoy the gunny theme. And, since I use Windows Live Writer to compose blog entries, it keeps a record of all postings for you, so I manually plugged back in any posts that were missing. Unfortunately, I've lost all the comments after 6/23, so I apologize to those of you who had insightful things to say during the last month, but that information is gone.

Speaking of which, feedback seems to be broken, so I'm turning it off until I figure out WTF is going on. (Update - Comments fixed)

I'm back. I'm tired. And there's been so much to blog about over the past few days, I'm not sure I'm going to catch back up.

Time for some rest...
