From a strictly practical point of view, if someone's goal was to inflict fatal injuries, a shotgun is a much more ferocious weapon. Machine guns have better PR.

Depends...... on the circumstances

If your target is 1,000 meters away you'd stand a better chance of hitting it with a .50 cal. round from an M-2 Machine gun than a Remington 12 ga.
