At issue is a bill in the Legislature that, if enacted into law, would require handguns sold in New York to be equipped with a laser capable of etching a gun's serial number on the firing pin or chamber, thereby marking each cartridge as it fires. The shell casing would then act as a fingerprint identifying the gun. California already has such a law and Congress is considering a federal version of it -- a measure that no doubt would have received the strong support of Senator Moynihan.

So, does this laser inside the gun etch the serial number onto the firing pin every time or just occasionally, when it thinks it might have worn down?

And, being that such a laser requires extremely high power, will there be both a battery powered model as well as a plug in version?
