Anti-Rights Idiocy

The entire push for microstamping or ammunition serialization has nothing to do with solving crime and everything to do with increasing the costs associated with manufacturing firearms and their accessories in a concerted effort to drive manufacturers out of business.

So, here's my thought. If the government insists that the cost is slight and not prohibitive, then they should cover it. Each manufacturer who is forced to comply with this new scheme should be able to claim a check from the government each month to cover the costs associated with retooling, administrative costs, legal fees associated with any issues, etc. The price of the firearm should not go up at all for the end consumer and instead be born by the public in general since it is the very same public we are told this is to protect.

If this technology is so viable and will save so many lives, then like 911 and the police force, it is a service that should be paid for by all and not just a few.

Robb, everything you say is true. In addition, we all need to remember that the people pushing this scheme care nothing about safety. It is not that they are misinformed. It is rather that they intend to make firearms incrementally less available, less legal, and less socially acceptable. "Incremental" is very effective if it is one way. Think of a snake swallowing a mammal. It takes a while, but if the direction is only one way, it happens.

There may be some dupes who believe the gun-control drivel, but the people pushing it cannot be that stupid.

I notice that several states have come up with bills for ammo serialization just recently; must be the latest "scheme of the month" for the gun grubbers.

I think its not such a big deal. When my customers told me to put barcodes on my export cartons, I complied even when it costs more. When they stamp expiry dates on cans its costs a little bit too.

I know here in Taiwan, some company that sells chicken broth actually can tell you which exact chicken your bottle came from.

Unless this is a huge cost, it will end up being easily done and routine.

Disclaimer: I don't really know anything about this issue, but am approaching it from a general manufacturing perspective.

I will tell you that Kmart once tried to have vendors print the vessel name on their export cartons...that did not last long as it was almost impossible to manage.

First up for this law to be worth ANYTHING it must be legal to own non-stamped ammo (otherwise I'll just drive to Maine, New Hampshire, or Vermont to stock up on cheaper ammo....I already do this more-or-less...also I mail order quite a bit of ammo) If it becomes illigal to own non-stamped ammo this makes the ammo I currently own (probably about $1000 worth, but to others it would likley be MUCH more) plus all my handloading supplies and componants (God don't even ask...much more than the $1000) would all need to be either confiscated or "re-bought" at "Fair Market Value" (if you don't know why I put that in quotes, you're beyond my help)

Many ammo vendors won't want spend the money for the new equipment (note that standard packaging for ammo is 50 rounds for pistol rounds, 20 for rifles, though bulk packs also exist....also with the volumes produced in the factory if the ser# could be imprinted on the empty cases without too much problem....ie: if 10,000 rounds are loaded by a machine all at once...then they're going to be inspected and devided into 20-round rifle boxes....how can you keep from those being mixed up....and you don't want to be stamping, etching, or engraving on live ammo....it could probably be done safely but I see it as overly risky)

So many ammo venders won't sell to the state that chooses the system (unless somebody trys it as national law) as it would be just a small market share.

Its just a quick way to my shooting supplies dry up.

I would venture to say that cartons and containers have significantly fewer handling concerns than small cannisters of metal and powder that jostle, jangle, and jolt around most of their lives, end those lives by being exposed to extreme heat and pressures. After all, if we are talking about stamping the metal, I can so see the end result being a burst casing, especially on higher-power rounds (oh, wait, those are "sniper" rounds, and will be dealt with on the next incremental step to firearm abolishment... sorry, forgot). And if we are going to "print" on them or something... well, that ink had better be bloody durable, to survive the bullets just living in the same box with one another.

And then there is the whole reloading problem, that adds a whole new level of complicatoin to the situation.

The end result is that we do not really need this. This would not solve any more crimes than microstamping would (which is to say, none), and it only allows further invasive measure for the government to futz around where it has no business.
