I broke down and picked up a high-speed, low drag, choke removal tool (e.g. a quarter) and proceeded to take out the modified choke from Ugly Betty. Seems the range nazis* won't let you shoot 00 Buck because an M&M size pellet might gum up the target tracks. So, in order to shoot slugs, I figured it would be best if I removed the choke.
After un-choking, I went to Wally World and picked up a box of 15, Winchester, rifled slugs for $8 and headed to the range to meet up with Greg.
Unfortunately, so did 50% of everyone in Tampa. No shotgun for me. Poop.
Granted, I did get to shoot some "Sound & Fury" loads, and well, let's let Greg describe them
I did get to shoot Robb's flash-bang .357s. That dude needs his head checked. Sure, they don't really kick and they are accurate as hell... but if you were to use them in self defense, you wouldn't even need to hit the bad guy... the concussion alone would, at the very least, disrupt his bowels. Yeesh. The good thing about 'em is that when he's shooting them in the lane next to mine, it solved my occasional flinching problem. I flinch when he pulls the trigger, and then my .380s seem like .22s. Actually, I think everyone at the range who wasn't part of an artillery division probably flinched.
That sound you hear is my ego stretching to unsafe proportions.
Speaking of the Sound & Fury, I stuck with 14.1gr of Blue Dot and the flattened primer issue wasn't that bad. Just slightly flattened on one edge, but I think this is more of an indication of something being too tight or too lose somewhere. The stuck casings appear to be specific to a single chamber, and I'm working on that.
Granted not the range night I wanted, but I shot well and my shoulder is still in its socket, so it's all good.
Slugs may be fired through choke tubes except those with X-Full constrictions or designated "Turkey tubes". Generally, open choke tube constrictions will produce more consistently accurate groups. The "Improved Cylinder" tube is a popular choice for slug shooting.
