But apparently when you do it, it's more like "common sense"

Update - My comment is "awaiting moderation". Part of the Reasonable Discourse™, I assume. You can't be reasonable if you don't control what's said. So here it is for posterity, just in case it goes down the memory hole.

So, the “Gun Industry” (a mysterious consortium of men sitting around in smoky rooms, I take it, or do you have specific companies in mind?) talks about the possibility of home invasion and keeping a firearm nearby - because, in a safe with trigger locks and the ammo unloaded doesn’t exactly make it useful - is fear mongering yet you bringing up accidents and killing children is just… what? Looks like the same fear mongering that you’re blaming the gun industry for.

Funny that. Swimming pools kill more children each year than accidental firearm deaths. In fact, the only thing less dangerous in terms of accidental deaths for children is poisoning by gas or vapors.

Now, I wholeheartedly agree that children should not have easy access to guns. My carry piece is always on me, the shotgun is out of reach, and all other firearms are locked up. However, you can ask my 5 year old little girl about what to do if she finds a gun and she’ll tell you that she’s supposed to leave the room, do not touch it, and find an adult.

The best way to protect children from accidental firearm injuries (something that has been drastically declining for years) is to educate them. We tell them to “say no to drugs”, not to talk to strangers, and not to play with fire because we wish to keep them safe. So rarely do people talk to their kids about guns because of the fear mongering from the anti-gun side. People actually have this impression that gun accidents are much more prevalent than they really are.

Teaching children about gun safety is no more going to make them want to play with guns than teaching them about the dangers of drugs is going to make them want to snort cocaine.
