Anti-Rights Idiocy

So I stumble across this post by a young man named Chris, and as us gunnies are wont to do, I'm trying to start a conversation.

Later in this segment Beck said "guns are not bad". It is really remarkable that Beck would be allowed to go on TV and use Columbine and Virginia Tech to argue that we need MORE guns, instead of less guns. Guns have only one purpose, and that is to shoot things and kill or injure them. In Beck's twisted mind more guns would equal less violence, but Beck should tell that to the 10,100 Americans killed by guns in 2005 alone.

To which I've responded. Repeatedly. Please go look at the conversation.

Now Chris' response to all of my facts is to shrug it off and "agree to disagree" which is code-speak for "I can't refute your logic, but refuse to change my position anyway". I'm hoping to engage him in proving me where I'm wrong (since he said I am).

I'm bringing this link here to hopefully spread some linking so that people who read articles like this can get the facts rather than an emotional-only view.

Please join the conversation. If I am wrong, please correct me since, as I have stated many times, knowing the truth is more important than being right.

This may be a case of "Preaching to the Choir" but, I agree with you completely. I don't see how you could have been any more convincing than you already are.

Robb, I'd recommend you be a little more precise in your numbers. 10,100 / 270,000,000 is 0.0000374, or 0.00374%. No one's yelled at you from the other side yet, but I've found that precision prevents that diversion before it happens.

And if you're gonna round it to a single significant digit, by common practice that should be 0.004%.

I figure it's more pleasant to get your nits picked by a supporter than by an opponent. :)

lol, i appreciate the link to my site, however you have made your point, and i listened and was convinced slightly after you gave me the numbers and what not.

i just didnt want a conversation that went around in circles thats all, because thats what usually happens, and i didnt want to spend all day arguing the same points.

I would like to know what parts I am wrong about (we can't be both right when we are on opposite sides). If I am wrong, I would gladly change my views, and I would hope that you would do the same.

Chris, first I'd like to commend your courage. I've seen many people who try to press an emotional argument, who are confronted by facts just slip away and ignore the competition.

On a kindred spirit, note, I grew up in Portland, Maine in a VERY liberal household, and I held many beliefs similar to yours.

It wasn't until I was attending U Maine in Orono when I met a few friends who shot guns recreationally, and I joined them. The more I learned about guns, the more I realized everything I'd been told about guns had been wrong. Some big ones.

-People who legally own guns commit crimes on a very infrequent level.
-Most criminals have little use, or access to "Assault Weapons"
- Shooting is a very safe, relaxing and enjoyable pastime.

I'm currently living in Belmont Mass now, otherwise I'd be totally willing to teach you the basics of shooting and safety.

Though also it might be a fun experience to take the Maine CCW safety course required by all who hold a Maine Carry permit. Talk to your local PD about it, from what I've heard they're very friendly and accommodating to inquiries.

lol weer'd beard, my gun stance isnt that strong, its not a big issue for me, there are bigger issues in my mind, like the war, etc.

im in favor of guns, everyone who wants one should have one, and I favor harsher penalties for crimes committed with guns, and stronger gun legislation to keep criminals from getting them.

i dont think my position is that far away from you guys, as far as I can tell.

If that's the truth, then your stance is EXACTLY the same as mine, unless of course your idea of "stronger gun legislation to keep criminals from getting them." is like the Clinton Assault Weapons Ban, which made buying guns a pain in the ass for us lawful folks, and did nothing for criminals (Crime neither went up, nor went down durring the 10 years of the AWB)
