My take? It should be more common. Not to "scare whitey" as Uncle puts it, but to simply show that just because someone carries a gun it doesn't make them violent. Remember, only .01% of guns in the US are ever involved in crime. Why are we hiding them?

Don't know if it's possible to pass here in Florida, which is surprising given our status as the Gunshine state, but I'd love to try. IWB holsters can be uncomfortable and my wardrobe isn't super friendly to any other method of concealment.

I agree it should be legal... given the option though, I'll still choose concealed. On the topic of comfort, you may wanna look at Smart Carry holsters. I dunno how well they work with big fat Glocks...

The owner of the company says he's comfortable carrying a full-size 1911, cocked and locked... but I guess you should take that with a grain of salt.

I haven't tried one myself, but I'm considering it. They are located just down the road from me anyway. They don't look like they'd be as easy to draw quickly (especially with one hand) but for deep concealment, and days when your wardrobe won't cooperate, they might be nice. Of course, you only own "big" guns... My little Bersa tucks in just about anywhere (even though my holster kinda sucks.) On the other hand, if you could open carry, that would be a good excuse to get a nice fancy leather holster for your Dan Wesson,,,

You mentioned you wouldn't be comfortable with an IWB holster and no thumb-break. Would you consider a thumb-break basically essential if open carrying?

Well, David, let me respond by indicating I own all of one holster - A C.T.A.C. that I love, but honestly means I have limited experience. Maybe it's just mental, but I'd like to know you couldn't just yank out my pistol while running by. The C.T.A.C. holds the pistol well enough that I'd ride a roller coaster with it, but a good yank and it's out.

To remove my weapon from me today, you'd have to not only know where it is, you'd have to lift my shirt then grab. Not something you could easily do on the run.

I'd want something that can be done with one hand, but really only from *my* position. A thumb break kind of does that. It does slow one down, but I have to balance that risk with the risk of some asswad running by and snatching my piece.

I live in an open carry state, and it's nice to have that bit of protection against possible ColtCCO'ing... but...

I'm against open carry in practice.

The way I see it, if I'm packing and something goes down, I choose when and if I get into the fight. If I'm openly displaying my piece, my gun is in the fight whether I want it to be or not. I prefer to retain control over that decision as much as possible.

Comfort while carrying is a whole 'nother topic. If you can get away with wearing untucked shirts, the sky's the limit. I can successfully conceal a H&K USP45F in a Dillon OWB holster under an untucked golf shirt. People not blessed with freakishly long torsos might have to make do. :)

I generally prefer untucked shirts when I carry because it's both easier to conceal and more comfortable. But, being long torsoed, the slightest shrinkage in the wash renders a lot of my shirts useless (for both tucking and untucking).

And the decision to join the fight is always yours. You are never under an obligation to put yourself at risk for another unless you make the decision to do so. Although, I understand your point of view and will need to think a bit on that as it's not an angle I've looked at it from yet.

You can see a lot of really interesting discussions about OC vs. CC on there, especially in the Virginia portion.

I am a strong advocate of permitless open carry. People have the right to have a means of self defense available without having to get state permission for it first. As far as tactical advantage goes, I'd agree that CC is usually preferable. But there are a lot of variables that can sway that one in either direction. Most people that meet me think I look like a cop. Hell, I've had officers assume I was a detective one time when I happened to be near a crime scene. So, if someone were to decide to shoot anyone that looked like a threat, I'm screwed whether I CC or OC. However, there is one big advantage to OC: education. By open carrying at public events, I've had numerous opportunities to educate people about their rights. I also give them a chance to realize that you can be clean cut, educated, and friendly and also be armed.

During the winter, I rarely OC unless required (i.e. restaurants here in VA), because CC is far more practical. In the warmer months, it depends on how I'm attired, if I feel like changing clothes to be able to CC, and if I'm looking to educate people (or LEOs sometimes) while I'm out.

I know my size (6'3") and being male has an effect, but I would think that many people would benefit from the advertisement of their ability to defend themselves. I wrote a whole post about it here.

The scenario I have in mind is, say you're standing at the counter at Subway when someone walks in and robs the place. If you're carrying openly, the perp will react to your gun before it's even in your hand. He might run, or he might decide to pop you in the melon while you decide if you want chips 'n a drink with that. Either way, it's going to happen without you even knowing about it. If you're packing concealed, then you're out of the game until / if you decide to enter it.

I'm against that idea for the same reasons. Certainly an OC'd pistol will get reactions. But that reaction may get triggered without the carrier even knowing about it. Not good news.
