Reloading

Finished up my 1,000^th 10mm reload today. I know it's the 1,000^th because I'm out of primers now. Need to head over to Harborside Reloading to get some more. I also need .357 bullets and some Blue Dot powder, but those are going to have to wait.

I'm low on the TiteGroup powder I used for the 10s. Since I generally loaded 6.4gr. I have a little left over (there are 7000 grains in a pound). I also used LongShot for a couple of batches, but I didn't like it as much. I'm going to try some other powder for the 10 next time to see if there's anything else I might like more. However, the TiteGroup has worked really good for me up to now. I'm using 7.2 gr. for the remainder because it's one hell of a load.

I don't know why the anti-rights people focus so hard on the guns when it's the bullets themselves that do all the violence. The gun is just there to egg the bullets on.

I've heard Blue Dot also works well with 10mm, though I have yet to try it. Everyone says IMR 800X is the best powder for full-house 10mm but that it meters like crap. In my experience as a beginner, Accurate Arms No. 9 has been great with both 155-grain bullets and 180-grainers. I think I'll be experimenting more with AA#9 before I try any other powder. Why did you not like Longshot as much as Titegroup?

I have a question. Is there a reason you don't use Alliant, Bullseye? The tables I have seen lead me to believe it is a faster burning powder and takes less.

I'm still learning myself. I have used the blue dot and found it doesn't burn completely. I see lots of unburned residue on the table after shooting a few rounds. I've used it for 45 and 357 SIG. BTW, I've quit the 357 SIG.

Pistolero, my dislike of LongShot for 10mm is about as describable as why I don't like peas. I just don't. Didn't 'feel' right. Sluggish, no snap. Accurate and burned OK, it just didn't do it for me.

Jerry, the reason is that this is my first 1k of rounds, therefore my first purchase of powders. Just went on suggestions by other reloaders on Glock Talk. As far as the Blue Dot for .357, that's what has been the most popular for "loud boom, large fireball" which is really all I'm going for. The .357 is no longer used for SD, so I just want to have a little fun.

Not sure what I'm going to do with the 10 now. TiteGroup worked well for me and doesn't require much, but Bullseye could work too.

Well, with 10mm loads you definitely save money. I can load 50 for about $9 whereas a box costs $28, and that's usually the inexpensive range loads.

However, I just end up shooting more so it kind of evens out in the end.

High load density -- that's one of the things I love about AA#9 too. I don't know how far back into the case the bullet goes, but from looking at it with the naked eye it doesn't look like it could go much further back even with the minimum load -- although I do have a batch of cartridges I am not quite comfortable with shooting because they're at 1.245" OAL as opposed to the data spec of 1.250". Perhaps I could get away with shooting them without a kaboom, but I just don't want to risk it.

With the 357 SIG you have a small bottle neck to hold the bullet. The OAL is rather unforgiving and some new ammo can be unseated. If the bullet "slides" back the powder can blast by the bullet. If the bullet gets out of the chamber I question if it would get through the barrel.

With the 45 I like to be as close to the max OAL as I can be.

Same with 30 06, but I'm beginning to question the number of times I can reload a case.

I need to start loading for my 10mm. I do love it. A friend of mine has a small ammo manufacturing company and load my 10mm for me right now, but it is inconvenient as he is about 300 miles away, and more expensive than reloading, of course. He uses a Vihtavuori powder, I don't know which one, and there is hardly any muzzle flash at all. Next time I speak with him, I'll ask him which one he is using in my rounds.

To cut back on the expense, I had him load me some plastic bullets he had on hand. They shoot very well out of my Glock 20 out to 25 yds. and the recoil is a little less than my standard carry loads. $50 less per thousand.

GBW, I bought my Ruger 22/45 Mark III so that I could shoot until the cows come home and not break the bank, but I only need to shoot 40 to 50 10mm a week to keep my "muscle memory" in tact.

In fact, I should post about that later. I had an interesting night at the range yesterday.

You ought to pick up a Lone Wolf barrel. They have broach cut rifling and you can use lead bullets, further decreasing your cost/round.

If you're inclined, the LW barrels for .40 and .357 Sig for the M20 work pretty well, too. I just use the 10mm mag. I've only had one malfunction in the .40 in 200 rounds, and I was shooting one-handed, weak hand.
