Huh? They allow comments?

I'm 100% paranoid when it comes to surfing the Interweb tubes. Not paranoid as in hiding behind anonymity as everyone knows my name, but I don't allow hardly anything to run on my browsers such as JavaScript or plug-ins. In fact, I have software that disables everything until I explicitly allow stuff from that site to work.

Every here and there though, I get irritated when I read some opinion piece in a newspaper and, being a newspaper and not a blog, I can't comment.

Turns out, a lot of places do their comments via JavaScript and I just wasn't seeing it.

Whoodathunk?

javascript's seeing more and more use, because ever since the sixth generation browsers took over (Firefox, IE6) it's actually been possible to do useful things with it. used to be JS was pointless gimmickry, but nowadays, you can use it to build stuff like gmail and google maps --- stuff that hardly even seems like web pages any more.

your own blog uses javascript in commenting. last time i clicked submit, the page didn't reload; it just sent my comment text over and used JS to selectively refresh the small bits of the page that had changed.

Nomen, I helped write this blog engine, and it's what I do for a living (code for the web).

The problem is that a lot of JS can be used for popups and tracking (i.e. google syndication), so I just turn it off until I think I need it, and once I do, it's on for that site.

Sometimes, I miss small things. Most of the time, when I turn it on for a news site, I realize why I normally don't. Popups...

firefox, its builtin popup blocking, and the adblock plus plug-in have done outright wonders for my browsing. ads are rare things for me, now. i generally only see ones that a particular site hosts for itself. pop-ups i have to manually enable site by site, and most tracking stuff is adblocked with good old regular expressions.

(i need to learn more JS for my own job, i'm sure it'd make the web-coding part of what i do easier... but since most of my job is DB code, i procrastinate. i suck that way.)

Having already sold my soul to the Devil (Hey, I go cheap.), the Google Toolbar I have installed catches all of the pop-up ads. If it does not, Norton Internet Security does (in addition to already removing banner ads and the like from webpages - very nice thing, let me tell you). And if it does not, IE 6 might. *shrugs*
