Insty links to a post about a professor complaining that movies give students a false impression about science

“Students come here, and they don’t have any basic understanding of science,” he said. “Sure, people say everyone knows the movies are not real, but my experience is many of the students believe what they see on the screen.”

Tell me about it. Most people believe that you can accurately shoot two .45 caliber handguns at the same time. The anti-gun coalition totally thinks Glocks are 100% plastic and undetectable by airport security. Ask most people if a semi-automatic pistol will click repeatedly when it's empty, and I bet you'd get a yes. Some fools even think you can shoot down an airplane with a .50 BMG.

I love movie special effects, however I always have a hard time suspending disbelief long enough to totally enjoy them. It bothers me to no end to think that there are people who assume that things they see in a cinema represent reality.
