So, last week I picked up a rather inexpensive, non-name brand holographic red dot sight. It is an NcStar D4B model with 4 different reticles.
Not a bad unit. Seems well made enough, mostly metal. The reticles are ok, but I prefer shooting it with just the single dot as it obscures the least. 7 levels of brightness and I find that in bright sun it is more than enough to see and at the indoor range, level 1 (the least) works the best. Brighter levels cause the dot to fuzz out a bit in darker conditions, but even at 1 it is very noticeable. I like the fact that I can keep both eyes open at the same time and still see just fine. Plus, I get to focus on the target now instead of the front sight and, well, let's just say my accuracy has increased by a rather large amount.
This is from 15 yards (and on the lower circle of my targets which are only about 6" across, 1.25" centers)
Not too bad! And shooting with that sight is freakin' fun! It's just satisfying to be able to hit the target like this.
I've got a little ways to go. I had quite a few strays which bother me and indicate flinching again. But the centers of all my targets were completely torn up which is a good thing. I have to learn to steady my hands a bit better as the dot dances a bit more than I like. I'll also need to shoot single, offhand, and isosceles to see how that affects it.
Then move to 25 yards.
I also shot a bunch of .38 specials through the .357 Magnum since I had a bunch and I also needed the casings so I could reload them. I'm going to try the lead bullets again, under a .38 load this time, to see if I can avoid the leading of my barrel. If not, I'll give them away to anyone on my reloading board. I also shot Sasha, and did pretty good, putting all 20 rounds on the paper at 50 yards, offhand.
The only bad part of the day was getting a .22LR casing stuck between my safety glasses and my right eyebrow. I now have a lovely, 22LR case shaped burn (you can actually make out the rim) that will probably scar. Thank God I'm semi-ugly to begin with!
Now, off with you all with a reminder to keep yourself well regulated!
