Range Time

Whoa.

The shots you hear in the other lane come from an AR-15. Listen to the difference. Learn to love the fireball.

I'll post a picture of the target later. At 25 yards, I was hitting a little high, so I figured out where the sight was aiming at and I adjusted accordingly. My last shot pierced the middle, making Sarah Brady "bake a brownie".

Not sure I'm going to be able to get to sleep tonight. Too much adrenaline.

Shoulder is fine. Pulled in tighter and the towel helped a lot (except for that one shot where you see me grimace at the camera. Ow) Going to see if I can pick up a new stock today and I'll see if they have stripper clips as well.

I decided not to reload and just pick up milsurp rounds. Found a place where I can get 800 rounds for $90 so I'm going to order 'em. Corrosive, but I'm anal about cleaning after every shoot anyway so that's not going to be a problem.

You call that recoil? You should try some of my 7.62X54R handloads. Even they pale in comparison to my 45-70 handloads.

I like M-N's My favorite is my Finn M39 followed in no particular order by Peter the Great M91, Ishevsk M91-30 (Unissued) Ishevsk M44 also unissued.

Locate some reloadable brass, work a spent primer in the pocket so you can reprime by finger pressure, then shoot 2 or 3 grains of Bullseye behind a .310 roundball or 0 buckshot. Quiet as a cat's sneeze and about as powerful as a .22LR. Shove the ball into the unsized neck and cover with a smear of Crisco.

If it is held right it should not hurt your shoulder; your rifle is punching your shoulder instead of rocking with your entire body.

Nice M44 though. They are fun. So are 91/30s. It's just the beginning of your collection of the russian flavors!

Сашенка would be my guess for Sashenka. I acquired an M91/30 as my first rifle. The boom certainly turns heads. I noted after my first trip to the range that the stock had left minor marking on my shoulder, probably wise to use the towel for comfort, got to pull that thing in tight. Mine is a 1942 also from Izhevsk, a fine piece of history.

Yeah. The guys next to me managed to shoot off the clip on the one on the right (that's why you hear them whining about getting a new clip).

They need a bag of them in that room ;)

It's probably like most military rifles of the time: despite the lowest site setting being '100', they adjusted the damn things to a 300 meter zero. Which means hitting anywhere from 5-10" high at 100 yards.

What you can do(assuming you want to mess with it) is put a slightly taller post in the front sight to bring it dead-on at 100 on the lowest setting.

And yeah, the fireball is interesting.

Either you are not a three line gun shooter or you not holding that rifle right. It should not punch you like that, but instead rock you back. Sort of like a 1911 does in your hand if held right. Then again recoil is based on ones perspective, to you the M44 is brutal, where me a Brit .303 kicks like a mule even if held tight to the shoulder.

Regardless, I am sure you will enjoy, as I know you will being an owner of a M44 myself. Can't wait till next deer season up in Michigan.
