Many years ago, when my wife and I were still newlyweds, I took her, for the first and last time, to a work Christmas party (now, it's a 'holiday' party and at work with no family allowed).

I had a good Friend, Christy, who I introduced to Kari. We talked for a little while, then parted ways. Because this point is salient, Christy is very attractive.

We met another couple immediately after in which I introduced my wife, Christy...err... Kari! Needless to say, I received the first official "If I could kill you with my retinas, you'd be dead right now" stare of my married life. She still brings it up from time to time although in better humor than back then.

I just heard that Christy was involved in a near fatal accident last night and is still in surgery, fighting to stay alive. From what I hear, her car flipped end over end several times, breaking her neck and crushing her spine in several places.

Her husband works downstairs. They were following each other home and he happened to be ahead of her and did not know anything had happened. He got home and she never showed up. He didn't find out until later when the paramedics called him.

I'm praying she comes through this alive. The information here is sparse, so I have to assume a lot, but I have little hope she'll come through unscathed. I also don't think my prayers mean much as I believe God protects our souls, and that's about it.

Blech. I have a pit in my stomach that's just making me sick.

Update:

Just got an email - The doctors are optimistic. They removed the majority of the bone fragments from her neck and had to put in plates. Only one shoulder was broken, not two.

Here's the miracle of it all - the car behind Christy was a guy and his wife - he a paramedic, she a nurse.  So they took care of her until the ambulance got there, and yes, they did have to cut her out of the car - they took her out in the seat as they did not want to move her after they stabilized her in the seat.

So, she's going to live, and that's a big weight off my chest.
