What kind of f’in question is that? Of course I’m gonna brew.

Tomorrow I plan on reattempting my California Common (also known as Anchor Steam) that so miserably failed two weeks ago. One of the issues I had was a faulty temperature reading as the metal braid on the temperature probe for my digital thermometer gives wacky readings when it gets wet. It was measuring ice water at 91° so I’m sure my 156° mash temperature was also incorrect which might explain why the resulting liquor was practically transparent.

Another thing I’m betting was more of a problem than the temperature issue (the initial strike water temperature was correct, I just didn’t maintain it perfectly) would have to be the crush of the grain. I think the mill I used didn’t crush it all very evenly. For this batch, I ordered the grain pre-crushed and it definitely has the right grind this time.

I prepared a yeast starter last week (I though I was going to brew but forgot to purchase hops, which are kinda necessary) and it’s been gurgling away in the fridge so it should really do good when I pitch it.

So, I’m all psyched to try again. Seriously, I had 3 very, very successful runs which is apparently odd for beginners so it was no big deal I had one batch fall flat. I’ll let y’all know how it goes.
