So here in my lovely home state of Florida, land of hurricanes, hanging chads, and feeding tubes, Jeb Bush* is preparing to sign into law a bill that allows me to protect myself if attacked. This is akin to signing in a law that allows me to shit after a good meal.

Seriously. The current law states that, in the case I am attacked in public, I am to make like Brave Sir Robbin and run away. Which is a good idea if you’re Superman and can outrun a speeding bullet but a rather silly notion is you’re relegated to sub-sonic speeds like me.

I don’t get passivity. I just don’t understand how any human being can think that the best survival method is to lie down, curl up in a ball and hope your attacker goes away. And make no mistake, when you call the police, you are using the threat of violence against someone: you’re just too scared to do it yourself. The cops have guns, batons, tasers, and pepper spray. If the person in question does not comply with the officer’s demands, they’ll be met with violence.

The current law protects the attacker. He has the right to walk up, punch you in the face and steal your wallet. If you attack him without trying to run away first, you are the lawbreaker. Would someone please tell me how that makes for a safer society? Why is it we blame the victim rather than the perpetrator?

I am a law abiding citizen. Actually, let me rephrase that. I am a citizen who respects your property and liberty. I have no desire to take from you what is not mine. I have no desire to hurt you or your family. I work hard, provide for my family and my community, donate money and whatever I can to help the needy. I am the last person you need to worry about owning a gun. Why try to make it harder for someone like me to protect myself? The harder you make it for people like me, the easier you make it for people who don’t obey the law anyway.

This law is stupid just for the fact that it had to be written. It should have never gotten to this point.

*Jeb stand for John Ellis Bush. Wouldn’t saying Jeb Bush mean John Ellis Bush Bush? Kind of like computer geeks calling the File Allocation Table the FAT Table.
