I need help. My blog is not sending comments or contact requests to me. I've determined that the problem lies within CDO on my server. My server is Server 2003 running Exchange 2003 but System.Web.Mail causes the following error

System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80029C4A): Error loading type library/DLL.

The web server is on the same box. If I run the scripts on my XP box, everything is fine. Run the same scripts on the 2003 box, kaput! Nada!

I've looked over http://www.systemwebmail.com/faq/4.2.1.aspx and practically every other article in there to no avail. I have tried OWA, and it appears to function just fine so I am assuming my CDO should be installed and happy, but...

Anyone have any experience in this? I'd really like to have my posts emailed to me again! Thanks.

Ah, what you have there is one of those whatchacallit thingies. You have to do a complete sweep of your doohickey and reinstall the entire thing. Or the other thing. Better yet, do em both.

Alternately, and for just a little bit more, you could hire somebody to read your blog, and email you as soon as they see you've posted something new. Sure, it's more expensive, but it puts Americans to work. Unless you outsource it, in which case....Benedict Arnold!....you're a Republican.

CDO is a COM library and the exception might to be related to that.

Have you un-registered and re-registered the components?

Can you write a simple VB6 app that calls the CDO mail server objects? If you can't send an email that way, then the problem most likely is with the components. If not, then I'm out of ideas.

Gordon, do you know of which ones to un and re-register? There's a bunch of cdo*.dlls that I have on the box and I'm not familiar with them all enough to know which ones I should dink around with.

I did a full reinstall, but it had no effect. I'm about ready to basically just give up and take up a new hobby like knitting.

Yarn can't be that complicated, you know?

I have a suggestion. Since Exchange no longer uses its own SMTP engine and relies on IIS, you could try shutting down all your Exchange services, uninstalling SMTP from IIS, then reinstall it, and bring Exchange back up. That should reregister any .dll's that are missing from the registry.

Then again, I'm not positive IIS SMTP includes CDO by default, that might not work on second thought. You could try an Exchange reinstall. Not removing it and reinstalling it, but when you run setup again when Exchange is installed, it gives you the option to repeat the installation. That should definitely fix the CDO issue if it's a registry issue.
