Sniffing SSL encrypted packets over a dial up line to see exactly who is dropping the connection at exactly 15 minutes is futile. Encrypted packets tell you very, very, very little.

Just in case you happen to be packet sniffing today.

When you're sitting on the case of the sender and typing on the recieving laptop, that info just isn't enlightening ;) It's almost like the damn packets are mocking my pain!

Add in a load balancer, the Internet, several hundred unknown routers, and an exact timeout at 15 minutes and you've got one confused as hell developer (not to mention a perplexed network Guru).

check to see if icmp is allowed.

set up a ping to ping from one box to the other (ping -t host under windows) and see if the 15 minute limit is escaped.

The problem is a specific application gatewayed through our portal. This application delivers specific databases for our store computers. The timeout only occurs with this app and no other. My application is literally 7 lines of code to transfer the file.

We're moving the app to a test environment to (a) see if the same thing happens and (b) not use SSL so we can see if Mr. Packet has anything to say.

An annoying problem, to be sure!

EXCEPT:

Geeks, please agree that after 10 hours of your geeking at work: draining coffee from laptops, slapping virtual shellac on crap code, coddling to l-users and selling your soul to the company server; you should get out and enjoy nature, pets, family, random hotdog stands, amusement park rides and libraries.

Or screw that puss-laden whiny rant and at least buy Halo 2, offer the significant other a 2 day spa coupon you got at the last company golf outing, bring back in nature with a cup of mango Darjeeling tea laced with Ancient Age whiskey, give the cat some fresh ‘nip and cook up some Nathan’s wieners. That would pretty much repeal the rant.

Except for the pets and library part.
