Star Wars: The Return of the Incongruities

Here's one question that I have about Star Wars. In Episode IV, R2 and C3PO land on Tatooine and are eventually purchased by Owen Lars. Owen and the bots do not recognize each other. The bots do not recognize the place.

Now, fast forward (or rewind, if you please. Damn prequels) to Episode II. CP3O is working at the moisture farm when Anakin shows up with R2D2.

This could be explained if the robots had their memory wiped, but how the hell would Owen completely forget about 2 robots he had already met, one of which he had previously owned?

Sorry, this has been bugging me for a while.... Had to get it off my chest.

well by my guess there are around 20 years between the end of episode III and the beginning of episode IV, and those probably werent the only two droids that Owen and Beru had owned, but then again C3PO was built by Anakin and therefore one of a kind, so you may indeed have a point. Either that or they were intentionally hiding the fact that they knew the droids from Luke

Well, C3PO was definitely a standard protocol droid so it is probable that that there were so many that Owen may have forgotten, but it just seems unlikely.

I chalk it up to Lucas being sloppy. I had always thought he had the story already written in his head, but it sometimes appears as if the first 2 episodes were an afterthought.

I agree. That the droids don't remember is easily explained. But Owen would have had to remember. Not to mention the fact that in Episode II, he was kind of a tall, chubby dorky looking guy, while in Episode 4, he is slight and haggard. Here's an idea: Maybe Owen was kidnapped and replaced with an imposter loyal to the Emperor, in order to keep young Luke from joining the rebellion (remember how Luke wanted to go to the Academy, but Owen refused to let him. Also, what about that suspicious exchange of glances between Owen and Beru, when Luke suggests leaving after the season to join the Academy?!)

Well, doubtful on the replacement theory. Had the Emporer knew about Luke, he'd have just killed him and spared himself a lot of hassle.

Maybe moisture farmers have a work hazard that causes stupidity.
