A post in which I attempt to remain ideologically consistent
There is no question that our opponents in the gun rights world are vile, disgusting human beings who are so blinded by their hatred of an inanimate object that it clouds their judgment. It is well and good that we continue to point out that the fruits of their labor actually result in more violence and highlight their logical inconsistencies such as supporting a woman’s right to do with her body as she pleases, so long as that doesn’t involve her being able to protect herself with the best...

It’s like speaking a different language.
What I say - “I think we should scale back the government” What they hear – “I want to abolish all government and let orphans and the elderly starve to death in the freezing cold”. What I say – “I think we need to get rid of the NEA and let the states handle education” What they hear – “I hate education and want to abolish schools” What I say – “There is too much regulation that is killing business” What they hear – “I want pure anarchy where we allow fat-cat CEOs to force migrant...

But Larry Correia says is much better As for all of the people out there on the internet having a massive freak out about the government potentially damaging something they love… WELCOME TO THE PARTY. You think this is something new or unusual? Nope. This is just about a topic that you happen to be familiar with. If you fall into that camp, I want you to take a deep breath, step back, and examine all of the other issues in the past that you didn’t know jack squat about, but your knee...

As a side note, I don’t really dump gasoline on baby seals and set them on fire either
In a post, Tam links to my Ford EarthF*cker poster from a while back. That post was simply a response to something Say Uncle said and in no way illustrates my desire to drive a vehicle that serves absolutely no purpose other than to piss off hippies. I may joke around about doing stupid things just to tweak the greenies, but jokes are all they are. Look, I drive my VW GTI because it gets 25 to 30 mpg depending on how I baby the gas pedal. More police action like this please
At UC Davis, there were no winners, only losers. In St. Louis, the cops came out on top with nary a molecule of capsaicin sprayed The rest were advised to please continue to protest, over there on the sidewalk … and what happened next was the most absolutely brilliant piece of crowd control policing I have heard of in my entire lifetime. All of the cops who weren’t busy transporting and processing the voluntary arrestees lined up, blocking the stairs down into the plaza. They stood...

Cops, pepper spray, hippies, and duties
So, after learning more about what happened at the UC Davis campus, I’ve changed my mind. We ask polices officers to do a job. That job entails them to enforce the laws as they understand them. When they are told to go remove people blocking a public pathway, they go do it. In this instance, the protestors were given plenty of notice of the penalties for failing to unblock the sidewalk. Those who continued to stay there knew the consequences of their actions and were planning on getting...

The following is a mishmash of ideas, do not expect it to make sense or flow. You’ve been warned. I may joke around that pepper spraying hippies is legally justifiable because “it’s fun, and they needed spraying” but like most of my dark humor, it’s nothing more than a chuckle, not to be taken seriously. I may dislike what some people say or what their views are, but I cannot justify using physical force against them just because we disagree. The pepper spraying of UC Davis students is a...

A while back in #gunblogger_conspiracy, I mentioned that it wouldn’t be long before the kid who came forward about the abuse he received at the hands of Penn State’s Sandusky would start getting blamed for being the victim. Scope, not size
Over at Joe’s, Ubu52 makes a comment about the Libertarian desire for small government Isn't the smallest form of government a dictatorship? Is that really what Libertarians crave? The problem here is that, like most people who disdain personal freedom, the concept of ‘small’ is confused with size rather than scope. To a Libertarian or someone like me with a Wookie-suit bent, it doesn’t matter if it’s one person demanding you live your life a particular way or a thousand, it’s the fact...

Why I fear for my daughters’ educations
I know it’s probably gauche to brag about one’s children, but both of my daughters are exceptionally bright. My oldest’s reading ability is literally off the charts. They don’t have tests that challenge her. My youngest too is well beyond her classmates in most areas. Sadly, this logic is lost on the vast majority of people
Company Paid Health Insurance is Part of Your Salary People don’t understand that they are already personally paying for their “employer-paid” insurance. Employers buy health insurance with part of the salary earned by the employee. Employees don’t buy this insurance directly so (1) it doesn’t attach to them when they change jobs, and (2) they can’t shop around to select the insurance they really want. From Bill Quick who says It’s hard to get people to understand this, but there...

Why this whole thing about shotguns in the library is important
When the anti-gunners bring up articles about a CCW holder getting in trouble with the law, they like to use it as ‘proof’ that CCW permits are a bad idea. We soundly mock them over this bit of stupidity. However, one young adult carries a shotgun into a library, something that is perfectly legal, and some gun owners are claiming that this single event is pretty much going to get the AWB reinstated and Heller overturned. Yeah, that’s a bit of hyperbole, but the following comments from over at...

Enough people in the United States now desire services more than they value freedom that simply 'switching...

DADT – Views from a socially conservative, politically liberal former Marine
This is always something that's hard for me to discuss in public because so many people are unable to segregate my personal feelings from my political views. I'm not gay. Never have been, don't think I'll ever really develop a hankerin' for trouser sausage. Many years ago, I was fairly homophobic. Didn't want to be around gays, didn't want them sashaying their gayness all over the place, didn't want them serving along side me in the Marine Corps (dear President Obama. It's a good system, fundamental to freedom
There is no justice in breaking the law to ensure a conviction. Gene Weingarten tells his tale of police misconduct in the courtroom Last week I was a juror in the trial of a man accused of selling a $10 bag of heroin to an undercover police officer. At the end of the two days of testimony, I concluded that the defendant was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I also concluded that he should be acquitted. Read the whole thing for all the details, but rest assured I would have been right...

And yet it's legal for a campaign to pay people to stand around with campaign signs as if they were actual supporters and NOT disclose such??

Felons and guns
This story is sad. The Fail Boat set sail early in this one and touched many ports. Here's the short story. Dude pulls a burglary in 1990 and is convicted. Does his time. Gets married, settles down, has a kid. Someone breaks into his home so he calls police. Police come, he shows them around, even points them to his wife's .22 and .380 she owned before they met. He's now busted and back in jail. At 18, Luke Groves made a bad decision and ended up with a felony conviction. I don't know the...

Not quite understanding the hate
Phil over at Random Nuclear Strikes has a link to some article about HSA's and how evil they are. The comments are telling, as "Wingnuts" are dismissed as 'non sentient', a great method of making one's enemies sub human. People who supported slavery did the same thing to blacks, as do jihadists for the same reasons. Anyway, the main thrust is that some HSA CEO stole money (which is illegal) and therefore HSA's are bad ideas. For whatever reason, most articles hatin' on HSA's seem to...

One of the major fallacies of anti-rights bigots when it comes to guns is that gun owners care nothing about crime. I hear it all the time that somehow, me valuing my rights equates to wanting criminals to have guns. Nothing could be farther from the truth. My point, and I would think where most of us gunnies come from, is that if you are waiting until a sale of a tool to prevent a criminal from doing mischief, you've not only missed the boat, but that boat has sunk off the coast as it were....

Victimless felonies
I've bitched about this before, but being that this is my blog I'm free to repeat myself (as well as say things over and over). The one thing the government has a legitimate claim to do is to punish criminals. Unfortunately, they've discovered that this is hard to do and instead have created a labyrinth of laws so complex that ever last man, woman, and child is guilty of something. Then, when the politicians' numbers are too low, they arrest a grandmother who purchased a set of...

Lower gas prices? Not gonna happen
I've heard quite a few economists say that the price of oil is going to drop eventually because it's a bubble of some sort. Now, I'm not an economist, nor do I play one on the Interwebs, but give me a break. That's simply not going to happen. Ever. Why? Because it's been proven that people will pay $4 a gallon for gas. If they had raised the prices and people suddenly stopped buying fuel at a greater rate than the added difference in price gained the oil companies, then the prices would have...

Misunderstanding a simple concept
One thing I see happen all the time is that when I say I don't want the government doing X, people automatically assume that I don't want X to happen. For example, I don't believe it's the government's job to manage education. That doesn't mean I think nobody should manage education. But private schools are generally superior to public schools because they receive their payment based on how good of a job they do. People pay out the wazoo for private school because of this. There's a limit to...

Notice those things on the outside of the bikini bottom? Those are called hips and are something to be proud of. Notice how there's no straight lines? We call that curves and curves are a good thing. Truth before pride
Something the anti's fail at tremendously is they never let facts get in the way of their views. Our side, on the other hand, fosters free and open discussion to ensure the right data gets disseminated. Then again, the truth helps our cause while it blows theirs out of the waters, so I can understand their reluctance to embrace honesty.

It is time to stop the easy access to pharmaceuticals
Because it is clear that easy access to drugs with the knowledge of how to use them is forcing physicians to commit suicide And when the pain is too much, doctors have easy access to prescription drugs and a precise knowledge of both how the body works and the amount of a drug needed for an overdose to stop breathing and halt the heart. That was the word used by a coworker to describe Exxon's profits for last year. *Big Sigh* It's amazing how other people's profits are obscene yet people will readily accept a new, higher paying job, or a raise without blinking twice. Why shouldn't we require licensing for having children? Nobody would be "denied" having children, but you'd have to take courses, pass a mental competence test, waive your 4th amendment rights from time to time for surprise inspections and have 20,000 laws which dictate exactly how you may raise your children - laws which differ from county to county, state to state and pay a fee that has to be renewed from time to time (only several hundred dollars). By poorly raising your child, he or she may...

But here is slowly moving somewhere else under our feet. This is what I was talking about when I discussed how our freedom is slowly eroding away. It is considered "reasonable" to restrict 2A rights when the "greater good" is served. Law abiding citizens are told that it is in their best interest if they are closely monitored when purchasing firearms, licensed to do so, registration, fees, etc. since these "reasonable infringements" will somehow lower the number of guns in the hands of those who would use them with ill intent. The justification for this is that we have a crime problem. Some of that crime is committed with a firearm. And...

The lingering nostalgia of freedom
I've been reading "Free to Choose" by Milton Friedman and what he said over 20 years ago is just as true today, and I can see we've completely ignored his wisdom. The problem is that Milton recognized that freedom and Free Market Capitalism are intricately linked. Since we've been brainwashed that looking out for yourself is considered "greed", we've raised generations of people who don't like the Free Market. What they don't understand that is to get rid of it is to remove the freedom that...

I want to clear something up because there’s a wee bit of confusion, and I want to ensure what I mean gets across. I appreciate any help or sympathy from anyone during the crisis of NOLA. I am thankful there are others in the world who know what the right thing is to do and then do them. Those people, as individuals, are to be considered friends. And the latest reports have 20 – 22 countries offering aid. My comment earlier was directed more at the people who were upset that...

Don't need your sympathy, thank you very much
Several bloggers have commented on the fact that, in the aftermath of Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans, the only country to offer any sort of support has been Israel. Some bemoan the lack of support and find it sad that with all the help we give others, the favor is never returned. And to summarize a comment I’ve left on this – Fuck ‘em. We don’t need their help. We don’t need piles of flowers at some church in a foreign land to help America rebuild what...

The economic considerations of fuel.
So, I drive a 95 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Liter Straight 6 that’s been modified to….errr, ‘enhance performance’. She gets about 18 mpg, but has a 20 gallon gas tank. So fill ups for me run around $45–$50 right now. The Mrs. and I talked about getting another vehicle, joking around that gas prices would put us in the poor house (we have enough money to fill ‘er up, it’s just annoying). So I did the math 20 x $2.55 = $51. I fill up every 8 to 10 days, so about...

A new idea for a smoking ban
Look, I’m an ex-smoker. While I was stupid enough to vote for a smoking ban, I realize now the error of my ways. However, if some idiot proposed a ban on smokers from using elevators, I’d probably vote for that sucker too. Man, do people go outside, light up, and exhale into their shirts? Why is it that all the elevators we have here smell like someone rolled themselves in a wet ashtray? Add to it Perfume Woman (a lady that you literally can tell everywhere she’s been in the...

People giggled. No shit. They laughed. Especially at the ‘You’re either with me or my enemy’ part. And when we walked out, the overall tone of the conversations were ‘Not bad, but geez, what’s up with all the stupid political statements?’. Why didn’t you...

I usually don’t get to read too much in the blogosphere over the weekends. I have to spend some time with the family. This weekend was no exception as the Mrs. had a Woman’s Retreat to go to and I had daughter duty. Had fun taking her to the zoo and she was even pleasant when we had to go do a little shopping. Mondays, I have to be very, very selective of what I read from over the weekend. This is why catchy titles and well written first paragraphs are so important for me. I...

U.N. Blog - Pay No Attention to the Scandal Behind The Curtain
So the UN Bloggers are pissed that someone is concerned about the UN Oil-for-Food scandal and cannot understand why Roger Simon is so focused on it. Maybe it’s because the UN is corrupt as hell and needs to be exposed so that we can all get off the silly notion that any organization that includes Libya as chair on human rights probably is exactly what the world needs for peace. Instead of refuting any claims made by Simon, the UNBloggers try to distract you with a list of things the...

The Joys of Stereotyping the Majority
I’ve been involved in quite a few conversations lately, both online and in real life (did you realize you can actually speak to real people?). A common thread in these conversations is politics or particular views on events. One thing I try to do when composing arguments is to frame them from a different perspective so that the other party must defend something they’ve not thought out completely, thus exposing the weaknesses in their logic. For example, racism. When I speak of...

That's not miserable. Miserable would be 8-90. That's close, if you ask me.I think what Glenn is doing here is common amongst all of us. When you want something to be true, it's much...

Show me your tits!
Bill at INDC is discussing abortion. A hot topic I don't care to cover here as flame wars are bound to start. However, I would like to expound on this concept of "A women's choice to do with her body what she pleases".Why can't women go topless then? Or nude completely? If it is so important that women* have complete control over their bodies, why do they allow the government to tell them they must cover up their breasts and genetalia?I'm not trying to be snotty, it's just that it perplexes me...

The new Bush ad.
Don't like it at all. I feel dirty for watching it. First major complaint is that Michael Moore, while being very popular on the left, is not a representative of the Democrat Party. The ad might as well have shown a video clip of the man on the street saying “Bushitler lied”. Second, the MoveOn ads aren't official Democrat videos. Again, the were not produced or distributed by the DNC, and while I agree they are vile,, they distract the viewer from any real issues that Bush...

My mind is progressively reeling...
I'm sucking on an atomic fire ball right now to get this awful taste out of my mouth after reading this drivel on the normally readable (albeit it sometimes over my head) Volokh. This is what “progressives” are so fond of? I want to look at the following so called rights that Cass Sunstein, a guest blogger, distills from FDR. The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the Nation;Excuse me? As a company owner, I have the...

Video Blogging? I'm not so sure of that....
Jeff Jarvis over at Buzz Machine is talking about video logs as the next itteration to blogging. Now, I do realize that blogging has made a significant impact on the print media industry, but I'm not as confident in VLogs to change the face of TV as Jeff is. I'm not saying it isn't a good thing, but I think that there is so much more involved in video than people are willing to go through. Take this blog for instance. I've got a steady stream of about 3 readers and 2 of them were looking for...

Wie sagen Sie Spam auf Deutsch?*
So we've got some of the most fancy Spam filtering stuff at work. Not a lot comes through because the system we use 'learns' patterns in Spam. Well, someone finally broke the code - I am now getting Spam.....in German. I mean, what the hell am I supposed to do? Go take a language course at the local community college so I can find out how to get the lowest mortgage rate on my house? These people are desperate. I don't get Spam. Viruses, yeah, I can understand why the idiots who write them use...

Michael Berg has officially squandered any sympathy for his son's death
Bill at INDC Journal was brave enough to attend an A.N.S.W.E.R. rally where Michael Berg, whose son's beheading by terrorists was taped and promptly buried by the Media, spoke. What he said was simply disgusting. Michael rallies against those who profit from the war, those who supported the war, and those who believe that what we are doing in Iraq is the right thing to do. In other words, the man is desecrating his own son. He uses his own son's decapitated head as a platform...

From the mouth of someone who's been there
Found this great read via El mezclador del perrito. For every person who claims that they cherish freedom. this should be a required reading. This is a person who knows first hand why we as Americans fight in Iraq. It's not about oil. It's not about empires. Damn the motives of a select few in the administration if you so wish, but my fellow soldiers out there fight for the same reason Marek Edelman so briliantly states. This world needs more men like him.

The Internet still has a way to go
I purchase photography equipment. Any photographer will tell you that photo stuff is expensive (my camera body alone cost $3200!). Lenses are ridiculously priced as well. I love to order online. It's fast and convienent and, if the shipping charges don't offset it too much, quite often cost effective. However, when the dollar amount starts cranking up, I'm still more comfortable talking to a human. That is an emotional thing and not based on any sort of logic. However, there is a logical...

This is simply disgusting
I'm trying to do my part to expose this travesty. The Hooters in Lakeland, Florida is having a contest {from Sekimori} The contest is for girls 5 and under, and will require they be dressed in little orange spandex shorts, and a tied up Hooters t-shirt. Simply disgusting. Please let Hooters know how you feel about this stunt. [UPDATE] I received an email back from Hooters. Thank you for expressing your concern regarding the contest in Florida. A store manager decided to host an event for...

Yeah, but where's the rest of it?
Sarin Nerve Gas Round Found, Partly Detonated in Iraq Ok, what bothers me the most about this is that when you make Sarin, you don't make it in 2 liter quantities. Where's the rest of it? I'm really surprised at the voraciousness of people who are so ready to deny this as a WMD. This was part of a larger system of weapons that Iraq was forbidden to have. Argue all you want wether or not we should have gone to war, but it's clear as can be that Saddam was working on weapons that were forbidden...

Nobel Peace Prize winner supports US Action in Iraq?!!?
Apparently so! If someone who has won such a high prize for peace can understand the value in what we've done and that war, while being a bad thing, is not always the worst thing, why can't so many American's who are opposed to our mission? Top Comment (IMHO): At this point in time, America will not win in Iraq. From this point forward, winning in Iraq will be up to Iraqis. America could only take the horse to the water. It is now time for the horse to drink the water.Hat Tip - Brain Terminal

The Incredibles are coming!
Oh man! I am excited already. The Incredibles website is up and with plenty of new info as well as [access denied] screens to really keep you guessing. I have been a Pixar fan for a long time. I actually knew about them before Toy Story came out from their shorts, namely Luxo, Jr. So far, everything Pixar has touched has turned to solid gold and yet, I admit, I am a little worried about this film. I know Pixar focuses on story more than the fact they're using computers for the...
