That hurts
Over the past year or so, I’ve been on a kick to get back in shape. I started running, then started hitting the Y to do indoor cycling which lead to doing a weight class which I’ve diligently showed up to twice a week. For a while, I was cycling twice and hitting the weight class twice a week and throwing in a run or two. My weight class has produced amazing results. It’s a low weight / high rep class meant to sculpt more than build mass, and at near-40, I’ve never looked better. I feel...

So, that 5:45 AM cycling class kicked my butt, did it?
Didn’t do so bad for my first time. I made it probably halfway through the whole thing before I simply had to give up. I did finish up the last push though. So, there’s something there I can’t do?

It’s Monday morning
Normally, I’d have posts lined up from the weekend. Alas, I worked all day Saturday and Sunday (along with a couple of 10 hour days from the previous week). The new job has me on an application that needs to be done by Friday, and I’m allowed to work as much as I need to to get it done. When life hands you unlimited overtime, you forgo things like ‘sleep’, ‘family’ and ‘adequate personal hygiene’ to make an extra buck. Speaking of, my former employer contacted me about fixing a problem they’re...

Stupid job
Had an invite to go play in an F35 Cockpit Demonstrator at Lockheed. Sadly, as a contractor, every day I take off can put a hurting in my paycheck since I’m now hourly. 6 months as a contractor then I roll full-time. Hopefully all the cool things I’m missing right now will pop up again ‘round that time.

I have a lot to say
And an injured flexor digitorum profundus muscle that makes saying it on the interweb tubes somewhat painful. Some friends of ours wanted to borrow our pressure washer this weekend. I realized it had been sitting, unused in the garage for a few months and tried to start it up. Success was not an option. Instead, I pulled various muscles in my shoulder and forearm and attempting to pull my ring finger upwards to get it out of the way while typing is somewhat painful. But, for you dear reader,...

On being an adult
Today is not a good day. I’m grumpy and there’s no coffee at work (we ran out). My budget forces me to spend my money on very specific things and while I have a bit of ‘play’ money, it’s hard to part with it for a $3 cup of coffee. For whatever reason, my temper is short and I feel myself being mean (and I’ve not even consumed any tequila!). I want nothing to do with my job today. I don’t want to sit in my office and I don’t want to bother learning the new stuff I need to in order to get this...

Running yellow
So, as probably a few people know, I’ve lost my mind and decided to start running again. I had been hitting my treadmill for a while and then decided that I should try the pavement again. When I started, a mile just about killed me. Now, I’m up to a mile and a half and barely breathing hard at all. So, I’m going to push 2 miles or so tomorrow. Goal is to run a 5k at some point and not wish for death while doing so. My cardiovascular system seems to have gotten into shape faster than I was...

Hunting feral pigs in a parking garage isn’t as easy as it sounds
One, your auto insurance will only cover 2 cars that you hit and only if you hit them with a slug. Buckshot isn’t covered. Two, people coming back from their shopping trip and getting in their cars will scare the pigs who will then run under other vehicles. I have the strangest dreams sometime.

Not a penny left
As of right now, every last cent that I will earn in March has been spent. Every. Last. Cent. That means my total available free cash on March 31st will be $0. And I couldn’t be happier. I’ve recently started the Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, you see and instead of earning money, putting stuff on credit cards, and hoping I had enough to cover it when the bills came due, I’ve decided to make a budget. I know how much money is coming in, and I assigned ever last penny to a specific...

Things you may not know about me
I love animals. I enjoy zoos and whatnot and am always disappointed that the only things you’re allowed to pet are stinky goats (especially since you have to walk through a minefield of bb sized poop). I don’t know what it is about me that wants to pet pretty much everything, even if it has poisoned quills or would probably chew my hand off. My favoritist animal of all are penguins. I squee like a little girl when around ‘em. If they didn’t projectile poop every 15 minutes and were legal to...

The best part of my day yesterday
Was when I was laying upon a gurney in the ER with a saline drip in my arm. Really. Went to a walk in clinic since a) I'd been nauseated for over 10 days b) I started a cough on the previous Friday that hadn't gotten any better and c) on Saturday developed an amazingly horrific case of motion sickness. The nurse decided that there were too many variables and that I should hit the ER and have them check me out just to make sure it wasn't neurological in nature. I hate going to the ER. With a...

Weight lifted
My grandmother, who is 88, had her gallbladder up and quit on her. Surgery was a risky move as she had been on blood thinners for a while as well as her age, but I just got news the surgery went well. Doctors removed the gallbladder and didn't find any signs of cancer or anything, so that's excellent news. She'll be going home tomorrow. That's been on my mind all week.

Second verse, same as the first
Saw another neurosurgeon yesterday regarding my neck. Surgery is absolutely out of the question, but she did a better job of explaining why. While my disc is protruding into the epidural space, there's still room for the spinal cord to move so there isn't any real pressure on it from the herniated disc. My neck has experienced some straightening which is normal especially in people who sit in front of monitors all day long. Because of this, my muscles have 'compensated' and at some point,...

Range bag tips
One of the things that I failed to put in my range bags was bug spray. I normally shoot indoors and my complete lack of planning now has me covered in around 200 bug bites that each itch like hell. To say I'm currently in agony would be putting it mildly. Being that the bites cover around 60% of my legs and arms, I can't use the topical Benadryl. I tried, and I ended up knocking myself out (but kept waking up to scratch). So, Off goes in the range bag. Period.

The doctor had some great news
Apparently, he saved 15% on his car insurance by switching to Geico. Oh, and that he was adamantly opposed to any sort of surgery for me. He believes that I can reduce the pain by proper exercise, a metric boat load of Aleve, and possibly some physical therapy. Good news is no surgery, which I was sweating, but then again, no instant relief for the pain. The Vicodin has been really helping at night, but I'm just going to have to man up and work on keeping my head upright and my posture...

A work in progress
My hair is a strange beast. On top of my head it's so thick, it gives scissors trouble, yet I'm not hairy at all. Growing facial hair is a slow, arduous process that involves weeks of looking scruffy. There are certain areas on my face that refuse to grow hair, and therefore my beard has been trimmed over the years to deal with this phenomena. I tried growing a moustache over a decade ago and gave up when I had my driver's license picture taken with it – and I looked like I would have a hard...

Tolerance
A few weeks ago, I was flossing and managed to pop out a filling on a molar. Didn't hurt, but it was uncomfortable to chew. I put in some of that temporary filling stuff, but it only lasts a few days at best and food would constantly get jammed between the teeth, making the gum sore as hell. The soonest I could get the appointment was today, which kind of sucked because at the time I made the appointment, I had insurance. Now, I'm temporarily self insured during my probationary period at he...

Electroshock therapy
I'm not 100% on board with chiropractors. It's not that I don't believe realigning the bones doesn't work, it's that I don't think snapping your neck and spine can cure everything from backaches to athlete's foot. However, with my neck going haywire, the doctor suggested I try it out and get some therapy since it doesn't seem to be responding to the drugs. So, I made an appointment yesterday. Here's the funny thing – I wasn't a patient, but I called and got an appointment on the same day. So...

If at first your don't succeed
Apparently you are supposed to try stronger drugs. Went to the doc yesterday regarding my neck problem which has not only made no significant improvement, the pain started moving down my back (I think out of compensation). They had me do some x-rays to make sure it wasn't anything boneular or whatnot, but they were pretty sure it was just one hellaciously kinked up muscle, so they amped up the drugs. In addition to the muscle relaxers, I was given Naproxen Sodium that is better measured in...

This is a pretty good representative of the massage I just got
an experience beyond limits... pain and pleasure, indivisible The guy took one look at my back and explained exactly how I sit at work. Each muscle he tried to rip off from its insertion point he'd name and indicated where it used to go (in case I ever wanted to try to push it back). One minute I'd be wincing from the pain (and I have a very high pain threshold) and the next instant I was almost falling asleep. Each time he'd work on a spot, he'd tell me what he was doing, why, and to...

Birds of a feather
Traction Control doesn't like Novocain. Deep Scaling - a dental cleaning procedure that uses ultrasound to remove tarter below the gum line is frequently offered with multiple visits (one per quadrant) and various pain killers being administered in the process. Imagine my surprise when my ‘Deep Scaler’ asked if I wanted the ‘pain killer’ shots. “Nope”, said I, “Do all four quadrants today and skip the pain killer stuff.” Same here. I'm not a masochist, but I find the pain from...

A true work of art
So, I'm relaxing in the ladies' room, 'dropping off some friends at the community pool' when I hear the main door slam open, followed by hurried footsteps. I know this sound. It is the sound of a man who is five seconds from needing a shower and a clean set of boxers. Oddly, mixed in with the sounds of discomfort and unbuckling pants is a slight, beeping noise. A familiar sound. One of a cellphone dialing a number. The man in stall #1 actually made a phone call during a bout of explosive...

I love my penis. We've been through a lot together. We’ve had our ups and downs, and being that his eyesight isn’t as good as mine, we’ve had quite a few disagreements as to exactly where he should venture. I regret that he’s managed to slip me a beer or two and win some of those arguments. Anyway, my wife and I seem to be blessed with a high degree of fertility. After my second daughter, it has come to my attention that it would be best if my penis wasn’t quite...
