You want to see reasoned discourse?
THIS is reasoned discourse Hi Readers — Here’s another question that arrived in th email. It began, ”Can we talk about gunplay for a few minutes?” Happily, by “gunplay” they writer didn’t mean, “What’s the upside of random shootings?” But rather, “Is it okay for kids to play around, pretending to shoot each other?” While it drives me crazy when one of my sons puts his hand up to his brother’s temple and pantomimes “Pow!”, I totally love it when they get out their Nerf guns and run...

An admission
I see things like this Up for sale is a Colt 1911 made in 1916. All original and in excellant condition. This is a piece of American history and only going up in value every year. And I feel nothing. Now, I'm not 1911 savvy enough to know if that's the real deal or not, but when it comes to collectibles or rare firearms, I couldn't give two shakes of your ass. I feel bad when I'm on #Gunblogger_Conspiracy IRC and people are discussing a great historical find at the gun show or...

Doing the right thing
Reading about that horrible accident with a 50 BMG upper, I was reminded that Zel Custom Manufacturing recently had to recall some of the 50 BMG uppers they make. I emailed Michael Brendzel about them because I was curious to know more about the issue they were having. Michael was kind enough to respond We discovered that ours, too, could bind when (1) the bolt handle is threaded longer than nominal, (2) the bolt is narrower than nominal and (3) the operator overtightens the bolt handle...

EVER. Yes. Your eyes are not deceiving you. That really is a Smith & Wesson J-frame revolver (a.k.a. a snubbie) with a laser sight, a flashlight, and a bayonet. Heretofore unseen, I have created the tactical snubbie. This is the Rooney of snubbies. Snub-a-rooney. You gotta see the picture. It's a sight to behold. JayG has really outdid himself on this one.

An affordable 50?
Michael Brendzel of Zel Customs (makers of the Tactilite uppers for your AR) asks Tactilite - The Affordable Fifty I wrote earlier that my goal for 2010 is to mainstream the .50 BMG. I've gotten a few questions about that and a few folks got defensive, so I thought I'd clarify. I think most people would agree that most shooters view the .50 BMG as an exotic caliber. For many of those people, it's something that they would like to try. Maybe even own. But the...

There can only be one
So, I've already complained about last year's dearth of firearms purchases. This upcoming year doesn't look to be any more promising. One of my biggest issues is that technically speaking, I've got all my 'needs' covered. Shotguns, Evil Black Rifles, .22s for training, CCW pieces, revolvers, competition rigs, etc. I don't need anything. So, considering that I might only get one chance at purchasing a firearm this year, what should it be? Here are some things to consider. First and foremost, I...

In the blogroll, I've added a new category of industry links. These are companies that manufacture firearms and firearm related gear. These are businesses that I have dealt with, manufacturers of products that I have used, or companies I generally think make decent products. Links to these companies are not paid links nor do they confer any sort of endorsement. I know there are weasels out there who think I'm some sort of paid shill, but the link section is simply for those companies I wish to...

Good question
What is 'tactical'? I never think in terms of tactical. I think in terms of utility and reliability. Will the firearm put the round where I need it each and every time? That's the first thing. Any doodads I can hang off the side that might assist me in those endeavors are secondary in nature, and rarely make it past the "Man, that looks cool. Too bad it costs money" stage. I don't have anything besides the standard plastic hand guards on my AR. Sure, rails would look cool, but...

As it should be
Glenn tells us a tale SCENES FROM A NEW AMERICA: So I dropped the girls off at a movie, and — since the Insta-wife was lunching with her mom — stopped at a Sonny’s Barbecue for lunch. A man — late 40s, big, with a wife and a daughter — came in with an empty holster on his belt. As he sat down at the booth next to mine, the manager came by and asked him if he’d left his gun in the car. Yes, said the man, who had a permit but thought he wasn’t allowed to carry in restaurants in Tennessee.....

Well, they've gone and made an upper in .416 Barrett (the only known caliber capable of making Chuck Norris flinch) ODESSA, FL (August 9, 2009) – Due on the success of the Tacilite .50 BMG, Zel Custom Manufacturing has released, today, a new line of Tactilite that convert a standard AR-15 into a .416 Barrett bolt-action rifle. Smooth operator
So, in my fantasy world where I actually have some cash to spend on toys, I've been thinking about what I would get if I had a few grand sitting around and could purchase a nice, new gun. Sure, I'd love a BMG and some year I think I might do it, however I'm still locked into the more practical mindset – I want something I can shoot the heck out of and would have a good use for. I don't hunt, although I'd really like to, so a nice hunting rifle would do nothing but collect dust. So, I've...

Change of heart
The other day I was talking about possibly switching the Para USA Gun Blogger 45 for a 1911 style pistol in 10mm. Enough people chimed in that the Para is special and I'd hate myself for letting it go, and I've put a lot of thought into that. After my range trip last night, I'm not only positive I don't want to trade it, but I've actually realized the more I shoot the 1911, the less I like my Glock. At 10 yards last night, the Glock stayed on target, but there was nothing approaching a...

So, just random IRC conversations has brought up the fact that someone might be interested in trading a 10mm 1911 for the Gun Blogger .45. While it's just talk at the moment, it really got me thinking. I'm dying for a 1911 pistol in 10mm. I love my Glock 29. I love the 10mm platform. I guess it's a trend
Tennessee apparently had someone at a state park with a gun. We had a similar incident today. Apparently, a man entered a local, small zoo while carrying a large handgun and from initial reports, even proceeded to hand feed a flamingo Interestingly enough, the flamingo didn't receive several 10mm bullets to the brainpan upon biting the man with the gun. A faulty mind-control chip in the firearm would appear to be at fault.

I'll take the Para TTR instead
Ruger's new product? A gas piston AR. A little underwhelmed, especially given we saw the bolt a few days ago and it was clear it wasn't a DI system. Look for the recall in 3…2…1… Maybe it's decent, I don't know. All I do know is that after firing the Para TTR, I wanted it with a passion. If I'm going to spend 2k on an AR, it would be that. Looked at a few places for ammo. I swear, they had sold the shelves the ammo used to sit on as well as the little tags that told you how much per ounce things cost. Several places had handwritten signs that said "WE DO NOT HAVE ANY 9, 380, 45, 40, OR 357". Nobody had any large boxes of .22LR either (and the 100 count boxes aren't cost effective). My Glock 29 is considered a sub-compact pistol. It ain't tiny by any stretch of the imagination, but I've found it to be relatively easy to conceal with my CTAC holster. There actually is a difference
When calling gun stores looking for prices on the right firearm, it is good to remember that Kahr makes the PM-9 and Kel-Tec makes the PF-9. One runs $800+ for some reason and the other $300'ish. If the PF-9 fits for me, that's going to probably be my choice for the mouse gun, Kel-Tec haters be damned. If the size difference between the P3AT and the PF-9 is negligible, I prefer the strength of the 9mm offering better.

Since I'm well endowed, it behooves me to purchase a small firearm since there's simply nothing to compensate for (they're talking about feet size, right?). Strange satisfaction
A buddy of mine bought his first handgun ULTRA-PORTABLE-DEATH-MACHINE and takes it to the range. But my pattern did give me a happy inner glow, more confidence in the weapon, and some 'strange satisfaction'. I know of that feeling. I'm not sure I can describe it in words, but it has a lot to do with the realization that you're not powerless.

I'm not going to lie, I don't need a Desert Eagle. You can't conceal them, they're too heavy and bulky, but dammit you can shoot a .357 Magnum out of them and what red blooded American doesn't love the .357 Magnum cartridge? It's all about the WANT!!! Granted, most people would get the DE in 50AE or 44Magnum, and I can't blame them. I may skip December in order to get a bit more practice time in being that I may have come in last place due to malfunctions, I definitely didn't shoot as well as I should have nonetheless. 20% tighter grip - that's my training goal for the next time.

Whoa - $920,000 for a single pistol
1840s Colt auctions for $920,000 An anonymous bidder paid a record $920,000 for a historic .44-caliber revolver owned by a Libby man. And the buyer got a bargain, said auctioneer James Julia. The Colt Walker pistol made for U.S. marshals in the 1840s belonged to University of Maine graduate John McBride's great-great-uncle. That must be one hell of a revolver.

Sheriff's deputies records show the victims called 9-1-1 sometime around 9:30 p.m., telling emergency operators they had been robbed at gunpoint. So, I watched this video yesterday and took the guy's advice about getting some high temperature wheel grease for the Glock. I've generally used basic gun oil to lube all my pistols and rifles, but as Mr. Yeager said in the video, the oil is loose and runs out of every nook and cranny which invariably collects dust and gunk. My Glock definitely shows wear on the barrel, so I figured for $3.19 for a tub of it at the local automotive chain, if it didn't work I could use it for my car or...

Yesterday was range time. I decided to not abuse my shoulder as much and left the M44 at home. It was a good move too as the 12 gauge was simply brutal. I did find some reduced recoil slugs that were quite a bit less painful, so I can practice with those next time. Range time was good. I shot the Ruger for pistol time, but the battering of the shoulder took a toll on my accuracy so I only shot about 100 rounds before I stopped. Here's a sample I see an average of 8.2 autopsies per day/365 days per year, and I can tell you that when the chips are down, there's nothing that beats a 12-gauge. As for handguns, the name of the game is not only shot placement but how a properly-placed bullet acts once it gets there. I've seen folks killed by a bb to the eye and others survive after being hit by several well-placed rounds with a 9mm. As for me, I'll take a slow-moving .45 to...

Pure, black evil
She's here. Let the PSH begin! (click to embiggen) Ko-Tonics (soon to be Cardinal Armory) 16" Upper Grunt. YHM flip front sight (no BUIS as of yet). Bushmaster lower and collapsible stock. PSH-tol grip. Generic, no name brand red dot sight. C Products 10 round magazine, which, by the way, it costs more to put ammo IN the magazine than it does to buy the magazine. So far, no urges to go downtown and spray fire the homeless shelter, but I've only had her for a few hours.

AAUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHH!!!
I just found out it'll be at least 3 more weeks before they work on my upper. Plus shipping time. I can't tell you how stressful that is. It's not Ko-Tonic's fault, per se. They're selling uppers faster than they can keep the parts in stock. My only complaint is that should have been noted at the time I ordered it so that my hopes and dreams wouldn't have been dashed ;) They're out of 16" barrels. Part of me wants to switch to the 18" because I'm impatient... But then there'd be some other part...

Just ordered the upper. Went with the grunt version with flip up front sight. Slick handguards to come later, just couldn't put them in the budget right now. In fact, I got a browbeating over the phone from the Mrs. for going so far over budget. Apparently, my wife is an expert telebrowbeater. Tim from Ko-Tonics was a pleasure to talk to. Apparently, the Ruskies keep a loaded firearm in their little spaceship. While I doubt there's much of a need for one up there, I don't begrudge them for having it. However, guns and Zero-G don't make a lot of sense for me. Here on Earth, I use the friction generated by my feet against the ground (which are held together via gravity) to stay in one place when I shoot. The amount of force pushing against my body is not enough to overcome the friction of my soles. In space, if you shot a gun,...

It's an interesting (albeit a bit morbid) article that talks about the difference between knife and gun fights. It's actually a good read to understand why personally I think crimes committed with a knife are worse than those with a firearm. With the knife, it's personal.

Recoil is the main reason I don't just plan to buy a Glock 9mm, although...

Today's mood - utterly foul
I'm not enjoying my new, $500 paperweight. I picked up the Ruger Mark III 22/45 Hunter last night. The very first thing I did was slice my finger open on the bolt and bled all over the damned thing before I had put a single round through it (I have pictures for later). I purchased some high falutin' CCI ammo from the store, but it wouldn't feed worth shit. I'd say 1/3 of the ammo crumpled on the feed ramp and half of the others wouldn't even eject. When they did fire, I was literally hitting 1...

With any luck
This will be mine by the end of the day. It's a Ruger 22/45 22LR pistol with 6 3/4" fluted bull barrel and Hi-Viz sights. The sight is simply amazing - it's a fiber optic that gathers light and shines almost like a red dot. I want a plinking pistol that I can practice on for hours at a time for cheap. I also want something the Mrs. can fire without flinching that will also help her start shooting better - something I honestly believe would make her want to go shooting with me more. The...

Hammering the point home with a 20 lb. sledgehammer
And then some. Short story. A lady in California goes into a gun shop because her ex boyfriend is hassling her and she's afraid for her life. She tells the clerk “I can't believe I'm here. I've been against guns and violence my whole life.” She's then told how long it takes and all the hoops she has to jump through to purchase a firearm “Ten days?” she cries. “First you have to take a test, here in the store, a written test. Knowing that these pictures of your 5 year old little girl helping you clean your Mosin Nagant M44 is going to cause several members of the Million Mom March to suddenly moisturize their Depends. Update: The bolt has been removed from the rifle, rendering it useless and impossible to fire. Hence why the muzzle placement isn't a major concern. Shopping list for the addiction
One can never have too many guns, in my opinion. However, one must balance needs versus wants. I'm not at that point yet, so I'm just compiling a list of firearms that I want. I need to put them in order and I'd like a little help in determining brands if anyone has any advice. Used is probably what I'd look at to save some dough. The .22 pistol - I'm thinking about getting a nice .22 with a red-dot sight for accuracy shooting. With the ,257 Magnum, 10mm, or the 7.62x54r, all I care about is...

Bath time
So, last night I had bath duty for the two girls. Usually the Mrs. and I swap days so that the other can get 25 minutes of time away. Normally I bring a book with me. The girls are old enough to play without drowning each other, so our presence is just in case of "soap in eyes" or a "sharing incident". However, last night I had no book. So I cleaned my rifle. The best part was Georgia commenting on how she liked the new synthetic stock and asking me what the bolt was and how it worked. She even...

Quote of the day - Because it simply doesn't get any easier than this edition
From Joe Huffman's blog Henderson's second insight was that despite the right belonging to "the people" in the amendment, it actually belonged only to the militia as an organized military force. To believe this, you have to believe that the United States is the only nation on Earth that felt a need to guarantee its government, in writing, the right to have an army -- which is possible, I suppose, if Jefferson foresaw the attitude of the modern Democrat party towards the military. The Second...

How I became a 'Gun Nut'
Sebastian tells his journey into Gun Nut territory. Here's my tale. If you've been a reader of SaaM for any time, you'll notice that I rarely talked about guns even a year ago. What happened? Well, unlike Sebastian I grew up around guns. My father always had one in his nightstand. My cousins hunted and sometimes I'd go with them. When I got a bit older, my dad would take me to the range with him on a regular basis. So, growing up, guns didn't hold any magical properties to me. They were just...

Citizens cannot be trusted to secure their weapons
I hear it all the time. "If you have guns in your house you're only adding to the guns in the streets since your weapon could be stolen". This is a major argument for removing the right to bear arms in the U.S. I guess the hoplophobes are going to start requesting the FBI disarm themselves for the same reason. Seven weapons, including two submachine guns, were stolen last weekend from an FBI agent's vehicle in Southwest Washington, the agency said yesterday. Also taken were ammunition, a...

40 reasons guns should be banned
Banning guns works, which is why New York, DC, Detroit & Chicago cops need guns. Washington DC's low murder rate of 69 per 100,000 is due to strict gun control, and Indianapolis' high murder rate of 9 per 100,000 is due to the lack of gun control. Statistics showing high murder rates justify gun control but statistics showing increasing murder rates after gun control are "just statistics." The Brady Bill and the Assault Weapons Ban, both of which went into effect in 1994 are responsible...

Protecting the family jewels and the built in seat cushion
No more Mexican carry for me! Got the C-T.A.C. in on Friday and it's a hit! Very comfortable. I'm attempting to wear it at 3:30 - 4:00 ish position if I'm going to sit anywhere, but I might try a more 'upfront' position to include crossdraw to see if it works. Not all of my clothing support it as they're getting tight as it is. When I got it, I put it on, tucked in my shirt, and had my wife try to see if she could tell where it was. She couldn't see it and she knew it was there. The funny...

The slow drift into gun-nut territory continues
Just purchased a C-T.A.C. holster from Comp-Tac. I've seen one in action and it looks nice plus it has a lot of adjustability which, being new in CCW, could make the difference between buying one holster versus a dozen trying to find the right fit. Even though the Glock 29 is considered a sub-compact, it's a bit wider than many other handguns. The C-T.A.C. doesn't add hardly any thickness (in the mm range) so I've heard it made it much more comfortable. I will be in a transition period for a...

Range report
Went to Knights Shooting Sports on Saturday to put a few rounds through the new Glock. The very first shot took out the X (@ 20'). The remaining 9 stayed within either the bullseye or the inner most ring. So, I'm confident I can handle the recoil of the 10 with no problem. The funny part is that since I've been practicing dry firing, there was 0 flinching for that first pull. I can't say as much about the next few ;) One thing that is really cool about the Glock 29 is that the rounds are...

Reason 2,435,777,293 to never trust what you read in the newspaper
Apparently, the MSM's vaunted editorial checks aren't quite as vaunted as they like to pretend. Let's look at this little gem GULFPORT - Johnathan Barfield had gotten used to answering the door at his FEMA trailer with a Glock pistol in his hand. Scary gun story. But when Tiffany Talley knocked Wednesday, the gun somehow fell from his grasp and to the floor, discharging a bullet that struck the Gulfport High standout student in the face and killed her. Just to clarify something, this is a...

And now the wait begins
3 days. To make sure I have enough time to cool off, in case I'm mad or something. Then, I get to pick up this My new Glock 29 10mm Auto. I originally was wanting a Sig 229 (with both .40 and .357 Sig barrels) but Sigs, as nice as they are, are pricey. I decided on the 29 because I am so used to shooting .357 magnums that I've simply grown accustomed to massive rounds. Full load 10's can snap your wrist off if you're small of frame, but at 6'3" and ...ummm 200+ pounds...or so..., that's not...

Me and my 'paranoid fantasy'
I am in the process of getting my Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit. At the same time, I'm planning on purchasing a new handgun that is more suitable to concealment than my Dan Wesson .357 magnum. I'm looking at a Glock-29 (10mm) which I'm taking to the range tomorrow to ensure it's comfortable for my hands. Now, I was just talking to a coworker of mine. The guy's fairly left leaning. The subjects of guns were broached and I mentioned I was getting my permit. This, of course, was totally...

Gun-nut quote of the day
From Q&O, discussing the horrible fact that concealed carry permits have lowered crime instead of turning the states that have them into Wild West 2.0 Sometimes the truth hurts, but not as much as a well-placed bullet.

Kick comparison
One caliber I've not fired before is .10mm. After last weekend at the range, I realized that while I'm no Hercules, my ability to handle larger caliber weapons far outstrips my wife's. Because the 9mm was about as much as she could handle, recoil wise, I didn't even let her fire the .40. Now, I liked the Glock 27 enough, minus the trigger, but a buddy of mine let me see his Glock 29, and it was much more comfortable in my hand, even with only a 2 finger grip. His trigger safety was a bit more...

A blast of a first time!
The Mrs. finally, after 7 years together, let me take her to the range. I brought a 9mm, a .22 rifle, a .357 Magnum (loaded with .38 specials), and a .40 Glock 27. I started her up with the .22 rifle. She did fantastic. 2nd shot was a bullseye, and she managed to put a rather large amount of the rounds close together. Then we switched to the 9mm. This was a little more of a challenge for her as a 9mm has slightly more kick than a .22, and being a pistol it scared her a little. But she managed...

Why is this such a hard concept for some people?
John Stossel on gun control myths Talking to prisoners about guns emphasizes a few key lessons. First, criminals don't obey the law. (That's why we call them "criminals.") Second, no law can repeal the law of supply and demand. If there's money to be made selling something, someone will sell it. {emph. mine} Gun laws have no effect on those who chose to not obey the law in the first place. Anti gun nuts just cannot seem to grasp this basic concept. Making it hard for law abiding citizens to...

Slow day - Reposting my own comments
So I was looking through my referrals, and I reread a comment I made on guns. Just not a 9mm type of guy. I want stopping power over piercing power. When I have enough cash to purchase extra handguns, yes, I would get a 9mm simply because ammo is cheap and the range calls. But for personal protection I want a round that says "Hey! Your left lung and most of your pancreas is behind you on the floor" rather than "Excuse me, just passing through". Man, I crack myself up…..

Range Report
Went to the ‘local’ gun range yesterday. I say ‘local’ because even though it’s in Tampa, it’s like a zillion miles from me. Anyway, the weeks stress had really bothered me, so I figured punching holes in paper would be a good way to relieve some of it. I took both my .357 Magnum and my .22 rifle. The small holes are from the .22 at the full length of the range, the larger from the .357 at ~25’. The holes at the bottom are me shooting offhand. So, if...

Attention fellow gun nuts: Need boomstick advice
So yesterday, my wife calls me to tell me there’s some strange guy just waltzing around our backyard. We’re having an addition built onto our lanai, which will now become a ‘porch’, and this guy was just out early to see what he needed to do. The problem is no one ever called or knocked or anything, which reminded me that we don’t own a shotgun. Now, for me, I am comfortable with my .357 Magnum. Since I hit the range on a semi-regular basis, I can hit my...

What a great point.
Why is it to gun control advocates that these phrases: "right of the people peaceably to assemble," "right of the people to be secure in their homes," "enumerations herein of certain rights shall not be construed to disparage others retained by the people," and "The powers not delegated herein are reserved to the states respectively, and to the people" all refer to individuals, but "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" refers to the state? From Evil White Guy and his 40 reasons...

Concepts I Just Don't Understand
So here in my lovely home state of Florida, land of hurricanes, hanging chads, and feeding tubes, Jeb Bush* is preparing to sign into law a bill that allows me to protect myself if attacked. This is akin to signing in a law that allows me to shit after a good meal. Seriously. The current law states that, in the case I am attacked in public, I am to make like Brave Sir Robbin and run away. Which is a good idea if you’re Superman and can outrun a speeding bullet but a rather silly notion...

I Need a New Gun
Seriously. I love my Wesson .357 but concealment is an issue. I'm dying for a Sig 226 / 229 but the costs just are too much right now. Come to think about it, the only thing I can afford right now would be a pistol someone lends me for a while. With ammo.Concealment isn't the only issue. We all know that guns talk to you and tell you to do evil things. My gun has stopped speaking to me since I fired some .38 specials at the range the other day. I tried to explain to him that someone had given...
