Dissent is the highest form of Terrorism
Over at Ace of Spades, I see this lovely gem from the White House In an oped in USA Today, John Brennan -- Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism -- responds to critics of the Obama administration's counterterrorism policies by saying "Politically motivated criticism and unfounded fear-mongering only serve the goals of al-Qaeda." Donning my tinfoil beanie, I go and read this The director of national...

Gonna agree with Ms. X here
When she says In other news, 3,699 to 13,999 Muslims serving in the U. S. military didn't go on a shooting spree yesterday. It's not the religion. It's not the guns. It's the crazy. And no one group has a lock on crazy. Yeah, it'd be nice if you could single out the wicked and the dangerously loony with a simple survey. But it doesn't work that way and no amount of pointing-with-alarm will make it so. This isn't to say that we do not face a threat from Muslim extremists, because we...

Those Jews don't mess around
DoubleTapper sends this fascinating look into Israeli counter-terrorism and the IDF. We here in the states had 9/11, which was a rude awakening to the realities of terrorism. We've managed to avoid anything of that scale, but rest assured we're not completely in the clear yet. Israel, on the other hand, has to deal with it as a part of life. Israel has learned over the years that terrorism is a stubborn phenomenon and that, in contrast to conventional warfare, decisive victory over...

A common debate
Mad Rocket Scientist emailed me last night with a link to this story regarding the Mumbai terrorist attacks. Speaking of the comments, MRS says A common debate, played out in a predictable fashion The article itself was primarily about the actual rarity of terrorist attacks (24x7 news coverage amplifies the effect, yet terrorist attacks are still rare) and the security measures that fail to prevent them. However, the comments took on a life of their own. Let me summarize JohnMcLane- This...

250 insurgents vs 30 Marines
Next time, bring a lot more insurgents FARAH PROVINCE, Afghanistan — In the city of Shewan, approximately 250 insurgents ambushed 30 Marines and paid a heavy price for it. ... “I didn’t realize how many bad guys there were until we had broken through the enemies’ lines and forced them to retreat. It was roughly 250 insurgents against 30 of us,” the corporal said. “It was a good day for the Marine Corps. We killed a lot of bad guys, and none of our guys were seriously injured.” OOHRAH!...

About that faked Reuters photo
In case you’ve been like me and pretty much unplugged over the weekend, Reuters has been caught publishing photographs that have been tampered with. The scariest part is that this particular photo was simply a shitty Photoshop job. As a wedding photographer, I use Photoshop to open people's eyes, take off that last minute zit, and even move people closer to each other. When I am done, there isn't the slightest hint that anything ever changed. For example, a friend of my wife's recently...

I still don't get it
Mohammed was a prophet, kinda like Malachi or Zephaniah is in Biblical terms. Therefore, comparing insults to Mohammed to insults to Jesus isn't quite accurate. So maybe soaking a crucifix in urine is ok, but talk smack about Habbakuk and you'd better prepare for Pat Roberts to offer $1M for your head?

New Device Will Sense Through Concrete Walls WASHINGTON - Troops conducting urban operations soon will have the capabilities of superheroes, being able to sense through 12 inches of concrete to determine if someone is inside a building. The new "Radar Scope" will give warfighters searching a building the ability to tell within seconds if someone is in the next room, Edward Baranoski from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Special Projects Office, told the American Forces Press...

Iraq the Model on the trial of Saddam Everyone could find a reason to immediately execute a criminal who never let his victims say a word to defend themselves “let’s execute him and get over this” sentiments like this were said while we watched the proceedings which were rather boring and sluggish for the first half of the session. At the beginning we were displeased by the presentation of the prosecution which was more like a piece of poetry in the wrong time and...

Pictures from Iraq
An old friend of mine just dropped off a DVD with some pictures her husband took while in Iraq. Talking to those who were over there, the picture is different than what is painted by the doom-sayers and armchair-middle-east-pundits here in the states. And this is coming directly from people who have been hit by IED’s and mortars. It’s not the über-rosy picture painted by the administration where women leap from second story windows to give the GI’s handjobs as they...

Making light of a dark situation
Sometimes, even in the face of evil, a laugh is just what you need. From Tim Worstall’s comment section on the London Bombings, TigerHawk says: There is no way that this is the work of the IRA. Sky News is reporting that the bus was blown up by a suicide bomber. Irish people don't blow themselves up. There is no Guiness in the afterlife. Update:Even more good ones in there Hey, no one said al-Qaeda was smart, only that they're bloodthirsty. Today is yet another sign of their...

In the Old Days, Treason Would Have You Hanging
However in today’s kinder and gentler environment, you only get a few years in prison. Prosecutors say the two men swore a formal oath of loyalty to al-Qaida as they conspired to use their skills in martial arts and medicine to aid international terrorism. The men were arrested Friday following a sting operation that the government said started in 2003. If convicted, each could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Wow. The mind boggles. 15...

Humble Lunch
I just spent my lunch hour listening to a buddy of mine's stories from Iraq. First hand information, without the filter of the MSM or even other blog pundits. He finally returned to work recently and this has been the first time I've been able to talk to him on a more personal level. I had avoided any mention of Iraq because I wasn't sure how he was adjusting and wanted to lay low. During lunch today, I realized why I'm so thankful for our men and women over there.Throughout the conversation,...

And a Damn Fine Point It Is
I wonder how many lefties thought about this before they jumped on the bandwagon? The key point:And isn't it odd the nation deemed evil and illegal for Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo and the Patriot Act is now held as the "safest" place on earth for fair trials by human rights lawyers.

Future SaaM Article
An old friend of mine came back to work recently. I hadn't talked to her in a year or so and we caught up this morning. Her husband is in Iraq right now and her stepson is going to Afghanistan in January. Her husband recently got hit with a roadside bomb causing him many lacerations and the loss of hearing in one ear. Even with that, he was back on duty in a few days. He has 2 purple hearts already and apparently lots of pictures and stories to tell. This is the second soldier I know...

A Day Of Wonderous News!
Arafat in intensive care due to sudden deterioration in health The health of Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat seriously deteriorated Wednesday night. He was placed in an intensive-care unit at the French military hospital where he is being treated.Arafat was flown to France for treatment last Friday after his health worsened. Rarely do I have such feelings, but this "man" deserves a slow, painful death. Well, at least painful because I really hope he kicks it soon. Hell has a...

An Open Letter to Mr. Bin Laden
Osama,You have recently declared that states that vote for George W. Bush this election cycle will be targeted for further attacks while states that support Kerry will be considered immune. While I appreciate your candor, I am worried that you might end up attacking the wrong people. You see, I live in Florida, a state that is fairly split on our wishes for President. Last election, we were the state that barely put Bush into office. This year promises to be close as well. I would hate to see...

I Hope the Iraqi Soccer Team Loses
And loses big. I don't want another repeat of this. I want the Iraqis to have victory ripped from them at the last moment and leave them with a bitter defeat. Why?Because I want the world to take notice. I want the world to see the looks on their faces and remember them - for the next game.Because if they lose, they will be back again. Had the US not gone to Iraq, many of the men you would see walking off the field would be horrified. Not at losing the game, but at what probably awaited them...

Bomb Scare Closes Universal Orlando Parking Garage
A friend of mine was there for the fun. I expect more happenings like this. Like Jeff Jarvis, I would rather have too much precaution than thousands of dead Americans. I also believe we'll see successful attacks as well and that many will bemoan that the extra security isn't helping. Those people will be wrong.

Nukes Found in Iraq. Someone Check Out Snopes.com Please.
I don't believe it. I don't want to believe it. Iraqi security reportedly discovered three missiles carrying nuclear heads concealed in a concrete trench northwest of Baghdad, official sources said Wednesday. This story has already been called 'stupid' by the Iraqi Interior Ministry. I'm inclined to believe him because I don't want to think that we just happened to 'stumble' on nukes. That would mean the possibility of more of them hidden in Iraq that we'd have no idea where they are but some...

He was, then he wasn't, now he won't.
Corporal Hassoun, the Marine who was reported as being murdered but then reported as not, has now apparently been "moved to a safe place"Al-Jazeera said the statement it received Monday said Hassoun had promised not to go back to the American military. Something here is starting to raise a big, red flag. When all is said and done, I think we're going to find out quite a bit of strange information regarding this case. However, lest I be accused of moving goal posts, let me say this important...

Terrorists Say Marine Beheaded
Iraq Militants Claim Marine Beheading from Yahoo News / AP "We would like to inform you that the Marine of Lebanese descent has been killed, and you will soon see the movie with your own eyes," said the statement, signed in the name of the group's leader, Abu Abdullah al-Hassan bin Mahmoud. The U.S. military in Baghdad said it was checking into the report of the 24-yer-old Hassoun's death but had no confirmation for the moment. This is aimed at ruining the 4th of July. RIP Keith Maupin
An Army soldier has been murdered by his captors. Iraqi militants killed an American soldier they have held hostage for nearly three months, saying the killing was because the U.S. government did not change its policy in Iraq, Al-Jazeera television reported Tuesday. I don't know what the proper response is. The “warmonger” in me wants to level a town for every soldier or citizen killed by these thugs, but logic and my humanity tells me that is wrong. Some may say we should...
